Folks,

Today I filed the necessary papers to become a candidate for President of the United States.

I want to thank all of you who have encouraged me with your support and contributions to join this race. Along with my wife, Jill, and our children Beau, Hunter and Ashley, we look forward to spending time with you as we campaign across America.

This is a challenging time in our country. In my view, President Bush has dug America into a very deep hole. This administration's mishandling of the war in Iraq may be the greatest foreign policy disaster of all time.

I have spent the last four years traveling to and from Iraq, meeting with our soldiers, our generals and our diplomats, and trying to redirect this president at every turn. But, as we have seen over the last few weeks, this President refuses to listen, even after he has been proven wrong time and time again.

Above all else, that is why I am running for President of this great country.

The next President of the United States must be prepared to immediately step in and act without hesitation to end our involvement in the Iraq conflict without further destabilizing the Middle East and the world.

Our safety is at stake.

Our soldier's lives are at stake.

Our energy supply from the region is now at risk.

And America's leadership among the world's nations is at stake.

President Bush will leave the next president no margin for error in dealing with some of the most critical challenges our country has faced in the last fifty years.

The next president must have the broadest possible coalition of Americans working together. This is no time for the divisive politics George Bush has practiced in America. We must unite our states around common goals and a unifying vision.

To restore America's place in the world, we also must focus on the hopes and needs of our own people. The Bush administration -- because it worships profits over people -- has forgotten that to keep America strong, we need a growing, vibrant middle-class.

We need our citizens to feel secure. Secure that their children will be cared for if they are ill. Secure that they will have a retirement income they can count on. Secure that we are doing all we can to end global warming and promote energy independence. And secure that their jobs and opportunities will not vanish like so many have in recent years.

This century will be a new American century.

But it will require vision from our leaders and faith in our purpose. I am running for president because I believe we can stem the tide by restoring respect for America's leadership in the world, and by changing our priorities as a nation.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are being squandered on unnecessary tax breaks for the top one percent of wage-earners, on tax breaks for oil companies that don't need them, and on our failed policy in Iraq.

Imagine.

Imagine what we could do if we could re-focus those resources on healthcare, energy security, education, and building opportunity for the middle class.

Like you, for me everything starts with family. Being able to take care of our elderly parents. Keeping our children safe. Providing them with real opportunity through a good and affordable education. Leaving them a world that is less dangerous, and more generous. And most of all, instilling in them a faith in God and themselves.

The next president of the United States has an unparalleled opportunity to do all these things and more.

It is within our power to literally change the world, and re-energize America.

The world is ready, America is ready and I am ready!

Personally, I am a fan of his.

He's from my home state, so I feel a certain affinity for him.

He had that disastrous run in '88 with the whole plagiarism issue and has had some health issues in the past.

I just don't think he's a "big enough" name to make it past Hillary, Barack or Edwards.

Now an Edwards/Biden ticket could be of interest to me.

I like him too, especially after I heard him on Good Morning America. When Diane Sawyer was asking about Hillary and Barack, he only said wonderful, complimentary, respectful things (and it sounded genuine--not political) when he could have bashed them and said they wre not qualified. I really like that!
