Maybe someone can help me??

As some of you have read my recent posts, I'm miserable doing my job and would love to go to school to be a teacher, but have NO clue how to go about it. I have ZERO college credits and graduated high school 12 years ago. I live in Suffolk County (Commack/Smithtown area) and would like to start to take some classes. We actually can't afford this right now, but I always feel "where there's a will, there's a way". I just don't know how to go about it or where to start. I'm thinking, maybe if I start working on changing my life, I'll start to feel better about it. TIA Chat Icon

Also, how do teachers do in LI? and is it worth it for me? I was even thinking daycare, it's less school. By the time I finish school, between having my family and other obstacles in life, I'll probably be like 45 years old or older. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Maybe someone can help me??

That's great! A good idea would be to start at Suffolk (which is cheaper) and then transfer the credits to a four year school. What do you want to teach? Stony Brook offers secondary ed., and is inexpensive.

Pay varies by district and education (whether you have a Master's when you start), but from what I've heard the range on LI is low 30s to 50s to start.

Exactly what I was gonna say!

Teachers on LI do very well - my Fh started at $45k in Nassau (with just a Bachelors in childhood ed), and another teacher friend of his in the same school district is "Masters+75", and is currently making OVER $100K a year.

Hmm the only SUNY on LI that offers childhood is Old Westbury. St. Joseph's and I believe Dowling do but would cost more.

that's exactly right - my sister is facing this dilemma right now. She started at SB, but they don't have elem ed. My FH graduated with his BS in that, BUT he was all the way upstate.

Good luck to you Chat Icon

Really?? The community schools don't offer early childhood education? Westbury is too far for me to travel after work. There's no other schools out in Suffolk??

My thought is that it's never too late.
I know of two people
1) who became a nurse at 39 and
1) who got her college degree the same year she turned 60.

You can start at a community college (Suffolk), and get an associate's degree. (roughly 2 years, 60 credits.) Good idea to start at Suffolk because it is cheap, and easier than some other schools. It'll help get you back in the "school" mindframe.

After the first 2 yrs at Suffolk, look into transferring into St. Joseph's. They're in Suffolk (pathogue, i think), and they're not TOO expensive. I also know that they offer grants and Fin aid - AND if you do really well at Suffolk, you may get an academic scholarship. Adelphi may be another option to check into - I'm not sure if they offer elem. ed though.

eta: get the associates in liberal arts - you'll have the most options when you're done with the 2 yrs.

Nic is right--either way you can do the 60 credits at a community college first, then transfer for the last 60. I think St. Joseph's advertises as being the cheapest private college on Long Island, but it is still more expensive than a public.

Re: Maybe someone can help me??

And just to get an idea, Suffolk only runs about $1800 a semester.

Re: Maybe someone can help me??

Thank you all for your responses. So I guess I'll start with Suffolk Community and take it from there. I'm thinking that my first step would be to call and make an appointment with an adviser, right? I'm not kidding when I say I'm clueless with this whole college thing. Oh to be 17 again and have mommy take care of everything for me !

Do it ASAP if you are considering this semester (fall)! And if they give you the option of who to meet with, ask for Tom at Brentwood or Toby in Ammerman. They're my favorites! I work with them both.

I'll keep these people in mind. Do you work there? I just called and they have openings for this fall (Sept). So I called DH to let him know and he thought it would be best if I wait until January to start as we really don't have the money right now with the house and all. We just purchased our first home and we are due to close Oct. 1st. I was thinking the same thing, so I guess he's right. He offered to make me my own room in the house with my own computer and desk so I could do my homework. He even offered to work extra or save some money aside that we were going to use to fix things up to use towards my first payment. He told me that we'll be so busy with the house, that my mind will be occupied and before I know it, it will be time to start school. I'm so excited and I cannot wait for January. Thank you all for your encouragement and advice. I truly appreciate it. Let the countdown begin !! Chat Icon

Re: Maybe someone can help me??

I just wanted to add - it is never too late! I went backt o school at 30 to get a second bachelors degree and since the new degree was so different from what I did before, I pretty much had to start from scratch. I was living in another state, and I went to a community college part time for 3 years and then transferred to a 4 year school to finish. The good thing about a community college is that there are lots of older people who are doing just what you want to. They never went to college, or decided to go back, after the first try didn't work out. If you want it badly enough, you can do it! and it is great that your husband is supporting you in your decision too - that helps a lot.
