Painting when one room flows into another

Most of the house I'm buying has rooms where the wall of one room flows into another. I'm not the biggest fan of accent walls (no offense to anyone) so I don't know how to get each room the color I want.

The bedroom is the biggest problem -- it's a loft style. When you go up the stairs, you're already in the master bedroom so the fourth wall of the bedroom is the same wall that the stairs are on and the stairs are right off the living room. How in the world do I paint all four walls of the bedroom one color without it flowing down the stairs and into the living room?

Any ideas are appreciated.

Well if you don't like accent walls you're kind of screwed! I would suggest a decoartive treatment like ventian plaster. You can even have one color flow into another similar color so you can make the loft part a bit different.

If you don't like accent walls, you're limited. Architectural details would help - columns, moulding - to help define the spaces.

You could keep the colors all on the same pallette and just choose darker (or lighter) colors for each space...making something like the stairway wall the transitional color. It's a twist on the accent wall b/c you're keeping the same color family just adding subtlties.

You could paint the LR wall one color, the bedroom wall a different color (in the same family), and paint stripes of the two colors on the stairs...

Our living/dining area is open. We have one color on top, a white chair rail in the middle, and bottom part a shade or 2 darker than the top part of the wall.
