Removing wallpaper
A few of the rooms in our new house have wallpaper. One of the bedrooms has royal blue wallpaper...yikes. Obviously, it's all coming down. Does anyone have some suggestions on how to remove it? Do you think it's just better to rip down the walls and resheetrock?

We had wallpaper everywhere, the painter removed it and did thin coat in the bedroom where the walls were bad...otherwise a little spackle here and there worked.

you have to get one of those scouring tools that will make holes in the wallpaper, then you apply chemicals to the wall that will loosen the glue - I don't reamember what its called but they have it at home depot. Then you scrape the wallpaper off the wall... why would you tear down the walls, that sounds like an awful lot of demolition just to remove wallpaper!

We've had great success with DIF Gel - not the liquid, has to be the gel.
Your best bet it to see how much of the top layer you can remove -without any chemicals- and that should help determine what you will need to use.
One room, just straight vinegar worked - but we needed to use the DIF liquid to wash off the glue.
Our study was tougher and again, we had to use the DIF Gel.
Afterwards, you'll want to use an oil-based primer.
That said, I have plaster walls...they are easier to work with when removing wallpaper as sheet rock can crumble if it becomes too moist.
Do you know what kind of walls you have?

It might be worth it to borrow or purchase a wall paper steamer. They usually work really well.

Stefanie - we have a steamer and 2 of the scoring tools if you want to borrow them. It's a lot of work but so worth it!

The Zinsser process will work with sheetrock. It worked for me and I have sheetrock as well.

If the wallpaper is not too old you might have success with some of the methods here so I would at least try that first but for us it was hopeless. There were layers upon layers of old wallpaper. If that's the case in your new house, you are better off putting up new walls - that's what we did (and are STILL doing, little by little, room by room). Removing old wallpaper is the biggest PITA in the world.

I found the opposite - hated the gel - LOVED the liquid!
If the wallpaper is newer - it will be cake. It's the older wallpaper that is a PITA

Peal the the top layer off of the wallpaper and then you still have the backing left. Use a scorer and a spray bottle and saturate the paper and let it sit (use warm to hot water) and then go in with a scraper and it should peel right off when you start one corner. It is big PIA. Just make sure you dont over water the backing so that the drywall gets wet you just really want to get the backing really wet
