Can you help me out?
Can anyone name some upstate areas that arent too far from the city. For example, New City I think is in Rockland County.
If you know of any nice areas, please list them here..nothing as far as orange county though. Thank you!

Nice for what? Living? Visiting? Shopping?
If its for living, what is important--train/bus routes, school districts, taxes, housing prices?

I have friends that live in Blauvelt & Pearl River. Both are really nice to live in and close to shopping. The Palisades Mall is close by. I think they're Exits 6E & 6W on the Palisades.

Yes for living. I am looking for good school districts, good prices, easy commute into the city but with the upstate feel.

You're going to have to look in Rockland, Orange or Putnum counties if you want a good price. Westchester has some great school districts, but the prices are

I think you need to work backwards -- how long of a commute is acceptable then check train lines or driving times from where DH works then see where that puts you. Then drive up and check out the areas and research the schools and housing options.

Rockland County Towns with Good School Districts:
Clarkstown: New City Nanuet Bardonia Central Nyack Congers Valley Cottage Rockland Lake Parts of Spring Valley Parts of Nyack Village Upper Nyack
Orangetown: Piermont South Nyack Grandview Nyack Pearl River South Orangetown Blauvelt
Decent School District--not the best, not the worst--
North Rockland: West Haverstraw Stony Point Parts of Garnerville Pomona Thiells (stay OUT of the Village of Haverstraw for now....)
Avoid-- Ramapo, Spring Valley, Monsey, Tallman

You are correct.....if you want a "decent" price....need to go further north into Orange or Putnam. Even parts of Orange are still ridiculous (ie..Monroe-Woodbury, Goshen, Florida, Harriman, etc...)

Re: Can you help me out?
A former coworker of mine moved to Warwick & loves it. He takes a bus to NYC , but that's in Orange & a bit too far.
I guess it depends on how far is too far for you & what kind of price range you are looking for. I live in lower Westchester, which is fine for co-ops, but too expensive for houses.
ETA- I don't know about school districts, but Yorktown is very nice & I don't think it is as expenivei as lower Westchester.
