Re: dress professionally?
Suit.
i understand a company may be business casual. But you can do business casual after you get the job. The suit is what is going to get you the job. I'd rather be overdressed than underdressed for an interview.

This is straight from a job advice website:
Women Always wear a suit with a jacket; no dresses Shoes with conservative heels Conservative hosiery at or near skin color (and no runs!) No purses, small or large; carry a briefcase instead If you wear nail polish (not required), use clear or a conservative color Minimal use of makeup (it should not be too noticeable) No more than one ring on each hand One set of earrings only
that's exactly what I have been doing.
I had an interview yesterday - my 3rd one in person (1 was over the phone) in just over a month, and that is exactly what I have been wearing. a black pinstripe pant suit with a pastel colored blouse, low pointy heels and a black shoulder briefcase. no purse.
my nails are painted a sheer pink, light makeup and I wore diamond studs & my wedding rings only.
Then you know what you're doing.
You can buy a suit for 60.00 bucks at Target. Spring for it, and look professional.

Re: dress professionally?
i'd buy a suit. i got one at marshalls lately for $75...a perfect black one. can leave jacket in the car and throw on when interviewing.
i wouldn't try to match a blazer to black pants you already have. you won't match exactly color or material and it won't look so good.

Re: dress professionally?
Definitely a suit. Whether companies are now allowing people to dress in business casual is irrelevant, IMO. You are making a first impression, and whether you like it or not, a suit looks more professional.
As an interviewer, it also shows me that you are serious about the interview. I know not everyone owns a suit, or wears one everyday, but I think everyone should have one for an interview.

Re: dress professionally?
Also, a suit is MATCHING PANTS and JACKET. Not a black jacket that is one shade of black, and pants that are another shade. Shoes should be shined with no scuffs, and hair should be pulled off of your face. No hoop earrings, or tons of jewelery.

Re: dress professionally?
I work in a business casual office & we are currently interviewing for 2 positions & the ones I saw all came in suits. They have no way of knowing what the dress code is here before they come.
For my department, I interview for an entry level postion & most come in suits. I actually decided one girl was an immediate no because she came in wearing shiny pants, carrying a backback & a Snoopy folder.
I'd be ok if a candidate had a purse, but for interviews & conferences etc I bring this:

Re: dress professionally?
Definitely a suit. And a skirt is more professional than a pants suit on a woman - if you want to get really technical about it, but usually it doesn't matter that much.

Re: dress professionally?
I go by what my boss said at my very first office job:
Dress for the job you WANT, not the job you HAVE.
Always wear a suit when interviewing.

Re: dress professionally?
I think a suit is always the way to go. And if you stick with a nice black suit you can always break up the pieces when/if needed. If the office turns out to be business casual you can wear the skirt with a nice top/sweater and you can throw the jacket part over other pants. I think it's worth the investment.

Re: dress professionally?
Based on the topic header "dress professionally", I would say that means wear a suit.
If someone indicated to you that you should dress professionally, then that's how I would interpret it.
If they said business casual is ok, then nice tailored pants and a long sleeve button down blouse, and heels.
It does depend on industry, and in my position, it's ALWAYS a dark suit. Personally, I don't wear a skirt suit on the first interview, ever.

Always a suit and I wear a skirt suit on my first interviews, but that's just me. If you wanted to wear a pants suit that would work too.
NEVER EVER have I interviewed in a pair of pants and a top.
Especially with agencies. The first impression is so important. Visuals count sorry to say. People's first impressions are with their eyes. I've had recruiters tell me I got the second interview because I had the complete package..good call on the suit. I always bring my purse and I've always had a portfolio for resume and note taking if necessary.
There have been studies about this done.
Wear a suit..it doesn't have to be an expensive one.

Re: dress professionally?
wow, what a debate. who would have thought? after reading all this, i decideded not to go on the interview after all. i know nothing about the company and if i got the job, i don't think i want to invest a small fortune on business suits, if i will only be working for another year.
but thank you all for your input.

I also would say a suit. It is a good idea to invest in a nice suit.

Same here. I always wear a skirt suit to the first interview, then if there is a second or third I would wear a pants suit. But, definitely a suit, especially as they said "dress professionally".

I didn't say pant suit nor did I say to interview in business casual -- I said as someone that interviews and hires people that a suit is not a necessity in certain situations.
Of course it's preferred, but I can understand where it's difficult for the candidate to do that and be able to look for a job without their employer knowing.
ETA -- you can be dressed professionally without wearing a suit.
I was actually responding to bklyngrl.
And I know it is difficult, I did it for 2 months, changing into a suit in the back of my car. But, I felt it needed to be done. I myself, could never walk into an interview without wearing a suit. JMO.
if u tell the headhunter that you're looking for work while working, they'll let the company know. u don't want a red flag to go off at your current job. jobs will be understanding

Re: dress professionally?
Whenever I've gone on an interview I've worn a suit, minimal jewelry, no polish, clear pantyhose and my hair pulled away from my face. One thing I didn't know is about the briefcase. I used to do the briefcase thing but I stopped. Now I use my pocketbook and I bring one of those leather folios to take notes (this is also where I keep spare resumes and have questions listed that i want to ask -- always be prepared with questions!).

id buy a suit target or h&m
you will definitely get use out of it
sorry didnt see that you had decided not to interview there
regardless- i do think a suit is a wardrobe staple and can be used separately or together
