What do you feed your 1+ year old?

I'm at a total loss as to what to give Jared for dinner. I think he's going to turn into a chicken nugget soon because that's all he seems to want.

I need more ideas ladies...Chat Icon

I make quesidillas. I put alittle salsa on the tortilla, chopped chicken and some cheese. Alex also loves anything with tomato sauce. Raviolis, pasta, gnocchi are regulars. When I make sauce I put everything in there so I can sneak in the meat and veggies. I also make a quick sauce of chopped onion, garlic and chopped plum tomatoes. I coook it down until it makes a sauce and add chopped spinach and serve it over orzo.

I feel your pain because Alex is extremely picky, he rather eat baby food then real food. Chat Icon

ETA - I also make rice and chicken. I take some onion, garlic and carrots and chicken bullion saute until soft. Add rice and water cook accordingly. In the last 5 minutes I add chopped cooked chicken and peas.

Sometimes I make him an egg for dinner. I fry an egg and serve it on top of whole wheat toast and he loves it.

Sarah is super picky, but loves grilled chicken. She really loves the chicken from Moe's, so usually once a weekend DH runs up there and gets a chicken quesidilla and we give her half one night and half the next. She just started eating pasta about 2 months ago, I've been trying that for a LONG time. Sometimes I give her pancakes or waffles with fruit for dinner.

I think as long as he hasn't had any reactions, there is no reason you shouldn't be chopping up your dinner into little pieces for him.

Don't fall into the trap where you're making 2 dinners.

Re: What do you feed your 1+ year old?

DD is not a year yet, but eats just about anything.

For meats, she gets chicken nuggets/tenders, meatballs (homemade), and grilled chicken which she seems to have a tougher time dealing with. The other night I made goulash (stew meat in a tomato sauce w/ green peppers and onions) and she ate that right up!

once in a blue moon I'll give her ONE slice of cold cut ham or turkey.

we have not tried hot dogs yet.

At that age, Andrew started to eat what ever we ate. Here are some dinner's I remember him liking a lot:

hamburger cut up into pieces (dipped in ketchup of course)

tortellini (I cut each one in half)

ravioli

any kind of plain pasta with parmesan cheese (he's not a sauce type of boy!)

cut up turkey

grilled cheese pieces

macaroni and cheese

any type of veggies, he loves the LeSeur carrots (canned)

I am in the same boat. All Jacob will eat is perdue chicken nuggets.

I have tried everything suggested and he just throws everything off the high chair--- small Mrt T's perogies, pasta, haburger, meat grilled chicken, Turkey,,

I give him grilled cheese for lunch so I don't want to do that again for dinner..

At least he is getting his Dr. Praeger spinach pancake for a veggie or peas and carrots..

I also don't kno w wha tI will do when canteloupe goes out of seasonChat Icon

Re: What do you feed your 1+ year old?

I tried perogies tonight and he shook his head N-O. He didn't want any dinner tonight...just a sippy cup of milk.

I felt bad, like I was depriving him, but if he's not hungry, then I guess he's not going to eat. Chat Icon

Re: What do you feed your 1+ year old?

I feel the same way!!!! I feel ike it's always chicken nuggets!!

I've always hated thinking what WE are going to have for dinner now I have to think TWICE as hard b/c I have to feed DS something tooChat Icon DH and I are not the best eaters (healthwise) so I like to make something better for the baby.
He definately isn't a big meat eater (besides nuggets or breaded chicken -which he recently started to eat) any other meat he chews and spits out...if he even gets that far. Luckily he LOVES his veggies (unlike his mom!).

Unfortunately I don't have anything to add to the foods listed above.

ETA: In a book I read recently they did say..if they are hungry they will eat! The more we try to force it, the more they will refuse. It also said toddlers can thrive very well on remarkably little foodChat Icon

He loves grilled cheese so I kind of use that as the bait...

I use my panini machine to make sandwiches with

steak
ground meat and zucchini
chicken
carrots
lentils

anything we eat I grind and put it in the sandwich and grill it with butter

he has no idea I just call it toast!

Emily loves grilled cheese too! I've snuck tomato slices into it before since she loves tomato but I am going to try sneaking some other stuff in there again today! It's a good idea.

I tried oatmeal today thinking it would be an easy thing to send to the babysitters and she did not like it AT ALL!!!

Jake loves chicken soup.

He likes the Lipton soups. I add an egg in during the last couple of minutes of cooking for some added protein.

And rice works well too. You can even mix the rice and the soup to make a soupy rice.

I agree. We try to always feed her waht we're eating if we eat early enough. Tonight she ate Chinese food with us (I just make sure no MSG). She seems to like flavor and spice so eating what we eat usually goes over well for her.

Re: What do you feed your 1+ year old?

Kevin's allergic to milk so I've been trying to find recipes that are safe for him to eat and that my DH and I will like as well.

Last night I made Teriyaki Meatloaf - super easy - and Kevin actually ate some.

1lb of chop meat
1/4 cup dairy free teriyaki sauce
minced onion
1/4 cup or so of dairy free bread crumbs

It seemed a little dry so I added a little bit of water and it made the meatloaf really moist.

mix and bake at 350 for 50 minutes.

(The teriyaki flavor is not overwhelming)

Nate also eats what we eat. He loves eggs, chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, cheerios w/milk, oatmeal, mac n cheese, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, carrots, green beans, rice.

The few times that we eat fast food or eat dinner late, I'll give him a gerbers lil' entree or graduates soups/stews/pastas.

Re: What do you feed your 1+ year old?

Since we started table food, Kevin pretty much eats what we eat esp for dinner. He likes everything - chicken, beef, veal, lamb, fish and even things with spice like chili and taco meat. I usually serve him meat and a veggie - because that's how we eat. Sometimes I will give him rice or potatoes or cous cous or things like that if I decide to make that with dinner. He loves mashed potatoes and you can buy them pre-made and not the powdered kind in the frozen section.

Ideas (other than what we eat):
-pasta (Kevin loves chef boyardee - I give him that when he doesn't want what we eat or for lunch)
-mac and cheese
-chicken nuggets
-fish sticks
-soup (I use canned soup and drain some broth)

I found when Kevin is being picky - he loves dipping. He love ketchup or salad dressings or applesauce. So we put a little on the side and taught him how to dip and he'll eat more than usual - although sometimes he just eats the ketchup plain - hehe.
