The CEO chose to make it political by saying nice things about Trump. Now he should suffer the consequences, as a Hispanic I support the boyvcott. Hit them where it hurts- their wallets.

I am the first to say business & politics do not mix. At all. All a business will do is alienate half the population by making their politics public. But, in this case, the man was at the WH for all the good/hard work he and his company has done and did what any gracious guest should do. Which is why I’m glad he hasn’t changed his stance.

Just like some of you say, you have the right to protest or boycott anything, especially as Americans. ... this is true. But this also means, I have the right to say it’s f’n ridiculous and cancel culture has gotten way outta hand. It’s very mean girl-ish. For those who say trump is nothing but a bully, sure like bullying people to do as they say or else

This! Plus he was invited, just like with Obama. Was ppl expecting him to bash Trump in his speech?

Ppl can boycott if that’s what they want but I wonder if they see the bigger picture and know who really are the ppl that would end up affected by this. Not to mention the complete desregard of all the work this company have done in the past and especially these past months. I’m not a Trump supporter but I’m not gonna judge him for a speech he gave or his political views and ignore all the work they’ve done with the community.

Re: Boycott of GOYA

So we are so supposed to boycott a product because they they said something nice about Trump? What is this freaking country coming to? This is such nonsense!
I cant stand Kapernack, and all his kneeling, but I still purchase Nike products. I dont watch football anyway. The sport is boring!

I find the divide in the world so disheartening.

The beauty of this country is our right to have differing opinions and be able to voice them. The fact that no one can have a differing opinion anymore is honestly the biggest threat to our way of life and our future.

Calling for boycotts because the ceo said something favorable about Trump? What if the right called for boycotts because he said so,etching nice about Biden? I personally (and this is MY opinion) think it’s over the top. And I am not a Trump supporter.

On a personal note my family has had a friendship with the Unanue family going back to their days in Spain so I may be biased but Bob is one of the nicest most unpolitical men I have ever met.

Re: Boycott of GOYA

Long time member and usually just a lurker but had to comment here. Yes the GOYA CEO has the right to say whatever he wants and yes its wonderful That Trump signed an executive order to help Hispanic access to education and better economic opportunities.

I get the CEO was trying to be positive but IMO his statement was tone deaf. Because from the very inception of Trump’s campaign he has made it a point to malign Latinos and incite his supporters against them. He announced his intent to run for office and made immigration his main point- OK fine. No problem with that. But he also substantiated the need for this by stating all people who come here from Mexico are rapists and drug dealers and started the whole “build a wall” initiative. Repeated how they are the ones taking our jobs and damaging the economy. His comments and Sh!t response to hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. Changing asylum rules to make the existing process “illegal,” this resulting in thousands of children and adults in what are essentially concentration camps. Trying to get rid of DACA. And just openly using overall rhetoric that created it easy and acceptable for his followers to scream at Latinos to “speak English,” and assume we are illegal/ ask for proof.

These are just a few examples off the top of my head. He has shown, through words and actions, to not given one crap about Latinos. But NOW that election time rolls around he does this executive order to court the Latino vote. Very transparent.

So no, I did not expect The CEO to be at the WH and trash talk Trump, but believe that saying “We’re all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump” was a poor choice of words to use when talking about a President who actively helped foster anti-Latino sentiment in this country.

Re: Boycott of GOYA

I think it's silly but as someone said above, I don't really care, I just do what I want. I think that "boycott Goya" will be mostly a media driven movement more than anything else. My opinion is that most people who religiously buy Goya are going to still buy it and many people who are saying they are boycotting don't buy their products now. I don't put much stock in these types of things - look at Chick Fil A thing a few years ago. There was a massive call to boycott them since they had some unpopular conservative views. However, the drive thru lines were and are still endlessly long.

Re: Boycott of GOYA

It's the same as boycott Nike for their views. Who cares? How is it considered bullying? Nobody is stopping anybody else from buying or not buying Nikes, Starbucks, or Goya or whatever else is being boycotted this week. The word bully just gets thrown around nowadays.

To add: if the CEO decided to turn down the WH invitation then the right would he calling to boycott Goya lol. How would that be any different? Would you call that bullying? This is one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't situations. And honestly who even cares anymore?

I’m going to agree with this statement. I’m sick of hearing everything is considered being bullied. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Who cares if people our boycotting it’s their choice , I thought that is what America Os about right, freedom?

You like their products buy them people will still buy them hey maybe this will get more people to buy their products just to support them. This will not take them down.

People boycott stuff all the time, this is no different.

Yes. If he turned it down and the right was calling for a boycott because of that then yes, my stance would be the same. It’s ridiculous. I didn’t hear about papa johns til i saw this post. That is stupid too. And it 100% is bullying. If he apologized for what he said, all would be right in the world of cancel culture. Maybe calling it “do what i say or else? Or feel how i feel or else? That’s bullying.

It’s insane and I stick by my opinion on the matter.

I don't see it, but you're certainly entitled to your opinion. Last week there was a Nascar boycott over their ban on confederate flags. I see it as a country so divided that literally anything and everything has become political. Like masks during a pandemic. I do, however, consider people verbally and physically assaulting store workers for enforcing store policy on masks bullying.

People have been boycotting things way before Trump and they'll boycott long after him.

Forget the mask thing. That is absolute bullying. And that’s for both sides of the issue. Wearing it vs not wearing it. We had a customer screaming at another in front of our business bc he didn’t have his mask on. I said it’s ok, he’s standing outside far away from anyone else. And he just continued to yell at the guy. Then there’s the anti maskers - like wtf. Yelling at employees because they feel it’s their right t not wear one. It sure is pal, you just can’t shop here! That is 100% bullying as well.

And you’re right. Before trump/after trump , it will continue. But to boycott because of trump is to me, asinine. They treat employees like crap? They have a sweat shop? Underground sex trafficking ring??? You got it. But he said something nice about the president and everything good this company has done goes to the trash. Again... f’n stupid. But my opinion I know.

Bingo. There is a nuance with words and its one thing to be polite and thank someone for doing something nice for a community (which we all know is a farce because Trump doesnt give a sh&&t about Latinos) than say something much more extensive like saying we are blessed to have a leader like Trump. Uhm, no.

As to the comment about the little people getting affected by this boycott, if sales plummet, the CEO will feel those effects..they have to explain losses to shareholders, and it does affect bottom line...I remember the whole brouhaha with Chick Fill A, and I dont eat there for that reason. I have never eaten at ChickFilla and doubt I am missing anything.Chat Icon

ETS: I won't be surprised if GOYA starts seeing a dip in sales that the CEO will step down. Time will tell.

I completely agree with the sentiment. The CEO's remarks were way over the top of what was necessary to be at the WH during the signing of the executive order. All he had to do was say thank-you.

But GOYA is a family held corporation - no shareholders or board of directors to answer to necessarily. (there have been internal family feuds) The people affected by this boycott will be the little people.

I don't eat at Chick-fil-A either - never have, never will. Nor do I shop at Hobby Lobby.

A company's CEO's political views have zero impact on whether or not I will purchase a product. I don't care about anyone else's political views so why would I care about the CEO of Goya? Or Papa John's? My own boss says some eyebrow raising comments on occasion but that does not make me want to quit a job I love at a well run company, ran by that same boss.

Just like everyone is entitled to have an opinion, everyone is entitled to protest. If not purchasing 5 for $3 cans of beans makes you feel like a better person, go for it. If banning chick-fil-a in your home makes you feel good, do it. If you don't want to buy Nike, don't. However, I do judge New Yorkers who voluntarily eat Papa Johns if they are not drunk or hungover Chat Icon

Back to Goya - I don't buy that brand anyway so there's nothing for me to change although it's good to know for the future.

If you're progressive check out Penzey's spices - they are the Ben and Jerry's of spices and I can't get enough of their stuff. (I literally just doused my leftover burrito with Arizona Dreamin'.)

The boycotts that I prefer to focus my energy on anyway are the ones that involve actual dollars derived from company profits and/or actual company decisions that harm people. I'll never shop at Home Depot again - Lowe's all the way. I also don't frequent the others mentioned already. I struggle with where to buy clothes because of manufacturing issues as well.

Re: bullying - no, this is not bullying. Bullying requires a power imbalance. There's not enough enthusiasm for this boycott for there to be any long term effect and Trump's cult will go out and buy more of the stuff anyway to help counterbalance the loss in sales. Bullying implies vulnerability and this guy isn't even close to vulnerable enough to be bullied. I think the word bullied gets tossed around way too much, but I digress.

No disrespect to Penzeys spices but I’ll stick to Latino made spices. We have a certain set of expectations when we cook spanish meals that I don’t think they will give us.

ETA: add me to the list to judge, I’m one of the weirdos who loves papa johns pizzas because I’m obsessed with their garlic sauce. But I also was the New Yorker who hated pizza because it was too oily. I take off the cheese & till this day my family fights over who gets my cheese. Like I said, I’m weird. Lol.

Boycott of GOYA

I don't blame people for being angry. Facts are facts. This CEO knew these comments are a risky move, considering #45's BLATANT and obvious hatred for Latinx.

He Called Latino Immigrants “Criminals” and “Rapists”
He Said Mexicans (And Other Immigrants) Were “Killers” Too
He Insisted The Mexican Government Intentionally Sends Their Criminals To The U.S.
He ‘Provided Evidence’ That Latino Immigrants Were Rapists
He Took A Jab At Jeb Bush Over His Mexican-Born Wife
“He has to like the Mexican Illegals because of his wife.”
He Brought Up Jeb Bush’s Wife Again Less Than Two Months Later
“So true. Jeb Bush is crazy, who cares that he speaks Mexican, this is America, English !!"

He Said His Followers Were “Passionate” After Being Told Two Men Beat A Hispanic Man In His Name
He Kicked Jorge Ramos Out Of A Press Conference
He Blamed Blacks And Hispanics For Violent Crime Across The Country

I see your point, but as a Hispanic, why would you hurt your own community in the name of progress? It is a successful, benevolent Hispanic owned company. Criticize, fine, but a nation-wide call to boycott is cancel culture. Trying to destroy a company financially to prove a point, trying to ruin a person's career/livelihood and trying to scare everyone into staying silent is extreme.

But trying to convince the other side is useless. We as a country are so diametrically opposed that I am not sure we can reach across the aisle anymore.

Trump and his cronies do so much more to hurt the Hispanic community than this company can ever possibly help.

I've already said I can't see this even having much of an effect but if it did, it'll even out. People will still demand the same amount of spices. They'll buy it from other companies whose businesses will then grow and who can then provide jobs to compensate for any lost.

Did you also call "burn your Nikes" cancel culture?

Boycott of GOYA

The fake pearl clutching is so corny.
Goya is not the only Latino spice brand. It’s just the most recognizable to white people. This was all optics to get some of the Latino vote and would appear well meaning to white people. Looks like plenty of people fell for it.

Cancel culture does not exist in a vacuum. the only thing people don’t like is being held accountable.

I'm Latina, I hate Trump and I'll keep getting the Goya products I'm loyal to. There are so many things I have to think of in my life right now, that I won't add more to my list.
