My test was not wrong. My friend had COVID two weeks ago. Had a sore throat which made her get tested, she was positive. The next day her sore throat was gone and it never came back. It happens.
No other symptoms but a sore throat?
Most people have a fever, no sense of taste and/or smell, IME.
Not something normal and it goes away but you have covid.
I would be testing again if this happened to me.
Again you are misinformed. The latest variant does not have the common loss of taste/smell as in earlier variants, is less severe and does not last as long. Bad allergy symptoms is how it is described for MOST.
Well I personally know someone with covid right now and she said she has lost smell.
Yes, less severe, a cold for most people.
Tell this to my 27 year old sister who has been unable to get out of bed since a Christmas. “Just a cold” - okay.
and she is vaccinated?

This. I don’t know many testing without symptoms. My BIL had 102 fever, fatigue, headache and stuffy nose. My sister said she felt like she had the worst hangover of her life with 102 fever and waking up in a pool of her own sweat. My pregnant SIL also has a fever, headache and is super dizzy. I’m pretty sure most people who are seeking out testing are experiencing symptoms. All my family members have jobs that require testing if you have symptoms. Don’t most non remote jobs require this? They’re all essential - teacher, cop, nurse.
I know many people who are testing as a way to justify large, private gatherings. They are essentially hoarding the at home tests and/or clogging the lines at urgent care.
I can see this in instances where families would see elderly or immunocompromised family members for the holidays. As a one off of sorts. But there are definitely people doing this regularly and contributing to the shortage.
I agree. Hoarding tests for any reason is wrong. We have a couple of test kits at home- literally 2 boxes. I wound up testing last week because I was exposed and had symptoms 5 days after being exposed. There were no appointments in Queens so I used one at home and it was negative but my symptoms were worse the next day -higher fever, chills, lightheaded- so I went Friday morning to urgent care. That was also negative. I wanted to confirm due to worsening symptoms and if I tested positive I would have to tell certain people - like my elderly in-laws- that they were exposed.
This was the first time I have ever felt the need to test and I have gotten sick a couple of times since last year.
Not.Everything.Is.Covid.
Oh and since you now obviously have a medical degree— in addition to your epidemiology and political science degrees- please tell me Dr. Windy:
When exactly IS it appropriate to test, if not in the situation I described above? Known exposure to someone who tested positive and then I developed symptoms like a high fever, fatigue, chills a few days later? What are the tests for if not this exact purpose??
Well since I am not one that runs to a doctor unless I am very sick, I would have not tested and just stayed home, just like every other illness that was around 2 years ago.
 okey dokey. Apparently you do not know what “very sick” is.

The Omicron variant has different symptoms.
I tested positive on Christmas and had a PCR test on Sunday that confirmed my positive. I had a cough for 2 days and now only head congestion. I’m vaccinated so this has been super mild. No fever, no loss of taste or smell.
So basically a cold. Something that people can avoid others and stay home and treat and then go on their merry way like it used to be, 2 years ago.
Instead of overwhelming doctors offices and hospitals.
Most people are not overwhelming hospitals. I went to urgent care because I could - I had travel plans and didn’t 100 percent trust the at home kit.
Drs offices and urgent cares are definitely overwhelmed. I tested both of my kids this week as they have a bad Cold and I got the last appts calling the second they opened. They are squeezing in more people than usual… i need recs for cough meds for DS and I can’t get through because the phones are ringing off the hook. Urgent cares are turning people away as they are overwhelmed with people testing. Places are running out of tests. I would assume people are going to the hospital as they can’t receive medical care elsewhere.
If you are sick, stay home. Regardless of whether it’s Covid or not

People on this thread make it seem like no one has Covid currently and that testing is ridiculous. I have barely known anyone with Covid in the last two years. In the last two weeks, I have personally at least a DOZEN of people with Covid. This doesn’t include all the people on my FB feed who have posted that they have Covid.
Same here which is my my hackles are up at some of these comments. No doubt there are people who are unnecessarily hoarding tests or using resources to tear needlessly. However until now, no one I personally knew has gotten covid or was exposed to covid. However, over the course of the last few weeks, several close friends and family have been impacted. So it’s still out there. That does not mean we need to freak out or cower at home but… if I am exposed then I am getting tested. If I have certain symptoms then I am getting tested. That is what testing is there for.
Seems like some people think if people do not test then covid will magically go away…
Covid won't ever go away as it is a virus but the numbers will go down and things could get back to normal if people just did the right thing and stay home when they feel sick.

Go down. That doesn’t mean the virus isn’t spreading like wildfire, it means that the data isn’t accurate for true positives. Like closing your eyes and thinking nobody can see you. Ignore it and it will go away. That’s smart.

Hmmm...I have colds every year, just had one recently, had pneumonia twice in 10 years and I actually went into Cardiac Arrest (which was not something I would have known to run to a doctor about).....sooooo.....

Why is the state setting up drive through testing sites at Jones Beach and Stonybrook again?

Actually this is quite funny you say this as I am listening to a Caribbean radio station right now and the DJ said the EXACT thing that the goal is for this to be nothing more than a cold. He even had a doctor on that said they feel it is getting less and less.

Exactly, not everything is Covid and why would anyone think twice to go and get tested with a runny nose? That could be anything and this is why we have such long lines at testing centers. Treat it like a cold and stay away from others and cancel plans you might have and wait it out a few days.
I honestly think her test was wrong as she feels 100% today. Something doesn’t sound right.
My test was not wrong. My friend had COVID two weeks ago. Had a sore throat which made her get tested, she was positive. The next day her sore throat was gone and it never came back. It happens.
No other symptoms but a sore throat?

Not something normal and it goes away but you have covid.
I would be testing again if this happened to me.
The Omicron variant has different symptoms.
I tested positive on Christmas and had a PCR test on Sunday that confirmed my positive. I had a cough for 2 days and now only head congestion. I’m vaccinated so this has been super mild. No fever, no loss of taste or smell.
So basically a cold. Something that people can avoid others and stay home and treat and then go on their merry way like it used to be, 2 years ago.
Instead of overwhelming doctors offices and hospitals.
Most people are not overwhelming hospitals. I went to urgent care because I could - I had travel plans and didn’t 100 percent trust the at home kit.
Drs offices and urgent cares are definitely overwhelmed. I tested both of my kids this week as they have a bad Cold and I got the last appts calling the second they opened. They are squeezing in more people than usual… i need recs for cough meds for DS and I can’t get through because the phones are ringing off the hook. Urgent cares are turning people away as they are overwhelmed with people testing. Places are running out of tests. I would assume people are going to the hospital as they can’t receive medical care elsewhere.
If you are sick, stay home. Regardless of whether it’s Covid or not
Why is the state setting up drive through testing sites at Jones Beach and Stonybrook again?

I don’t think there are enough tests available to. But yes, the larger sites should be reopened. They are reopening the Westchester County Center site but they don’t have a lot of availability.

Again you are misinformed. The latest variant does not have the common loss of taste/smell as in earlier variants, is less severe and does not last as long. Bad allergy symptoms is how it is described for MOST.
Well I personally know someone with covid right now and she said she has lost smell.

Since viruses never go away, yes, the goal is to have them become milder as time goes on so that you can live with them and walk amongst them and live a normal life. Like we did prior to 2020.
The goal can't be to have Covid not exist. Because that will never happen.
Even the vaccines don't stop the spread or stop people from getting it
So isn't the goal for it to be manageable?

Exactly, what IS the goal now? Get vaccinated, once, twice, 3 times, 4 times. Vaccinated people are still getting sick, some VERY bad it seems soooo...that's not the goal.

Yep, you got it. Goal is for healthcare system not to be overwhelmed and to increase survival rates. This has been successful with vaccination. As with any illness, there can be 2 steps forward one step back, which is what we are seeing with the current surge. Overall, there has been tremendous progress in managing this pandemic. It’s very embarrassing that some can’t see this.
Absolutely, we are NOT at March 2020 anymore.
