School district plans....education inequality?
So I’m reading various comments on different pages as districts unveil their plans.
Some have announced full time in person (if allowed) while others are hybrid (mostly due to size)
I’m waiting for my district to announce plans, but I’ve heard it will be full time. We pay $20k in taxes and moved here for the small school district. People are actually complaining that it’s not fair we can go back and afford all the modifications needed and all schools should have a level playing field.
What are your thoughts? Just trying to gauge if I should get excited we might go back full time or if the rug will be pulled from under us.

The plans submitted by school districts are just that-plans. Nothing is set in stone until Cuomo releases his plan for schools, which can look drastically different from what districts have submitted.

Yes, but some schools can not go full time bc they are so large. Or can not find the money to hire more teachers if cuomo approves in person learning if districts can meet his/cdc guidelines

You are allowed to choose? All districts have to submit plans for in school/hybrid and full remote but most are not letting you choose which one. They are options for the district incase the numbers go up and the Governor closes schools.

K-6 - In person instruction every day (assuming enough people buy into option 1)
7-12 - Hybrid model
*They may delay the start of K until January to "free up" some additional space for social distancing in hopes that schools can ease their way into a more normal structure come Jan/Feb.

That's great. We would never have enough teachers to do both programs. Can I ask what district your in?

That's great. We would never have enough teachers to do both programs. Can I ask what district your in?
I live Upstate in a medium sized suburban district (250 students per grade level).

Yes. But not the other way around. If you choose remote only, you can't change to the hybrid model. They also said should things improve over the school year and it's safe to fully reopen full time, they will.

Funny, my sons school just sent out a communication. They are planning for 5 days in school with a hybrid model. I’m not sure what that means, if it’s the 5 days in school one week, full remote alternate weeks. Or split sessions for the 5 days.
They also implemented the following:
We have begun to implement the following safety protocols:
• Purchase of automatic hands free hand sanitizer stations
• Purchase of hands free faucets & flushing devices
• Purchase of electrostatic backpack sprayer sanitizers to deep clean and disinfect daily
• Bulk purchases of masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes to have on hand
• Purchase of face shields for all teachers and staff
• Installation of streaming cameras in all classrooms for distance learning
• Installation of dividers on shared student tables in the lower grades
• Updated policies regarding arrival and dismissal procedures
• Limiting movement of classes during the school day

That is absolutely INSANE in the middle of a pandemic. The governor of NJ declared last week that EVERY SINGLE DISTRICT in the state HAS to have 100% remote learning available to EVERY student should that be what parents choose for the upcoming school year.
That to me is the right course of action.

Yes. Someone posed the question of optional remote learning at our board meeting last night and this is the exact answer given.

Our current district is overcrowded. And there is a large population that comes from low income families. They are doing hybrid. It’s unfortunate for those who are already in underserved communities...

That is interesting, because in the city they ARE giving the choice. And you can choose to become ALL remote at anytime, but you can't change to blended until the quarter ends/the designated time.
But there is no chance we are going 5 days, in person.

I don't think it's the best choice but I really do not see any way around it. There are not enough teachers to support doing two full plans simultaneously. At the elementary maybe if you pulled in your TAs and had special area teachers covering during the day, but what about secondary. Everyone can't teach AP Physics. It all just sucks and this is going to be terrible year!

You are right, it doesn't make sense how it's going to work. My daughter is only in 8th grade, but is scheduled for AP classes for 8th grade. I feel like she is going to need actual instruction for these classes. Not a bunch of links to sites, etc. It's all a mess

There will definitely be young kids home alone this year (or with slightly older siblings watching them). Not everyone can afford childcare, afterschool programs, or tutors. Many may rely on older grandparents. Scary times.

True but how any kids were home alone in the 70’s and 80’s as young as kindergarten and no one questioned that? I get that they will have to do school work so it will be different though.
