Re: Airlines and waived fees due to hurricanes

I've never been in that situation with 2 separate airlines- just give Delta a call and explain the situation- they should be able to let you know their policy.

Just called Delta. If I don't make it down there, I will lose my money for the flight home. I can't rebook or anything. Will never book with them again.

What do you expect them to do honestly? You didn't give them the business of the departing flight so there is no incentive for them. Your return flight has no weather impacting. Why should they take the hit on a cancellation and potential empty seat on a last minute change?

Exactly, there’s a reason they offer travel insurance or refundable flights for an added cost. It’s unfortunate but common this time of year with tropical storms & hurricanes...you take a chance with non refundable flights. Delta is usually pretty reasonable, I fly them a lot...their customer service has always been great compared to a lot of airlines.

I really didn't think when booking this. I booked JetBlue going because I had a credit and Delta was cheaper coming home. It just makes me appreciate Southwest all the more, as changing flights around is so easy.

Re: Airlines and waived fees due to hurricanes

The thing with Delta is you have to be very very careful when booking. Their basic economy is impossible to change a flight, cancel a flight, pick a seat, upgrade your seat.
It's cheap, but it's inflexible.

Airlines and waived fees due to hurricanes

I was able to change my flight on SW for Saturday without any cost. We are coming back on Wednesday so I’m not worried about that side of things.

That's why it is cheap.

I don't know how anyone can swear off an airline. I book what is most convenient/direct/and by cost.
I hear this all the time... The one i love the most is "i only fly jet blue"... really????
They are all the same generally -- if something happens, a delay, an equipment problem -- it sucks, but it happens to ALL of them. I fly a ton for work and have been through the Riga morale-- And yes, on Jet Blue too (hard to get a flight change or if something is cancelled onto a new flight bc there are so few!). To me flying in general is hell on earth and we are at their mercy.
If you were scheduled home on American they would have told you the same thing -- so should you swear off them too? United? I mean it is what it is unfortunately.

I find delta's seats to be RIDICULOUSLY small.
I have to buy comfort select upgrade to get a seat I would get as standard on Jet Blue or Southwest .
I am 5'9" and I saw the standard seats on Delta- no upgrade- and there is no way I could sit in them.
So yeah.
And that basic economy BS and they aren't clear about it.
No thank you.
I hate Delta.
I don't care if it's more to fly another airline- I will do it.

Same except I’ve sworn off of Spirit.

And in this case any airline would do the same. Depending on the strength of the storm they may increase their window. Right now JetBlue doesn’t even have a travel alert for the Bahamas.

But that is why it costs more -- the seat is bigger, more comfortable, so the price should be in line with Jet Blue for that seat.
Don't get me wrong i like the comfort but I usually go with convenience first.
My issue is that the typical reason why people swear off an airline can happen on any of them at any time. So it just seems silly to swear off one and not the rest if it will potentially inconvenience you (by limiting yourself) in the future.

I think for me, I have never flown Delta and made the mistake of buying that basic fare ticket. While it said I cannot cancel or change, I would have thought some courtesy would be given if I couldn't get there due to a hurricane. Next time I will book roundtrip with one airline. Just didn't realize all this. That would cover me both ways should I run into a problem one way with weather. I hear you about swearing off an airline. We are all at their mercy for sure. I swore off frontier after my last cancelled flight, but I just might not resist when their schedule changes and I see it is half price of the alternative.

We pretty much fly Delta exclusively. They have good customer service. Every single time I've complained (nicely), they have sent me vouchers, etc. With that said, it's not really their fault in this situation, so I can see why they (or any other airline) wouldn't budge.

Maybe the credit card you bought the tickets on offers some type of travel insurance/benefit. I would look into that possibility

Okay...Delta came through and issued me a voucher for a year to use. It took quite a bit of calls and several people to talk to. Chat Icon

That's good news. I guess now that they know where the hurricane is actually headed, they know they need to keep people from danger and possibly having to be evacuated in the middle of the storm
