Living in the moment?

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to live more in the moment? Books, articles, habits, etc.

I feel like I live a lot of my life looking to the future, and I have trouble living in the moment.

Stay out of retail stores that have Christmas stuff out in August! That's the first thing that comes to mind.

I think NOT taking videos and photos of everything you do can help. Just enjoy the event while it’s taking place. Otherwise, we’re seeing everything through the phone instead of as it really is.

Meditation. Calm your mind and you'll be able to slow down and appreciate the present.

I agree with this so much. I think I was the only mom in the room not recording my son's PreK graduation a couple of years back. I'm so glad I didn't...seeing him walk in the room wearing his little cap and gown is one of my sweetest memories that I will always cherish. The memory just wouldn't be the same if I was worried about recording it. But I did ask another mom to text it to me lol.

I agree too. I was just talking about this with my mom. We were admiring some pictures on FB and talking about how it must be so difficult to get such beautiful pictures. Are they really enjoying things if they're staring at the phone screen trying to get pictures of it? I'm terrible at taking pictures. Trying to get one decent pic to post on social media takes me forever. It's nice to have the pictures to look back on, but I'd rather enjoy the moment and not worry about documenting it.

I really try to passionately involve myself in all that I do. For me, I find that when I put in my effort and eagerness for an activity, and embrace its positivity, I enjoy it more. I'm talking about little things like cooking dinner and going to classes at the gym and bigger things like vacations and work.

I think that’s the problem. Worrying about social media. I don’t use FB and most of my pictures are silly, but I don’t care. It’s my kids being my kids. Not trying to play perfect to impress 300 strangers.

That's exactly what I mean. Like if I spent the time to take the perfect picture for social media, it would take me all day and for what? I don't even bother. I take a few pics here and there... when I actually remember. I hope for one I can frame (which almost never happens) and that's it. The amount of time people spend uploading their chosen pics, adding filters, etc. like they def can't be living in the moment and enjoying it. It's prob nice to have all those perfect pictures to look back at though.

Idk...My mom took us to Sears every year to have photos taken. The ones I have displayed in my house now are not those pictures. It’s the one where my sister is giving me bunny ears, or my brother is crying and I have an evil grin on my face. Those ones are much better!

Living in the moment?

Thanks everyone. It’s def not a taking too many pics thing, although I am someone who enjoys having beautiful family photos lol.

It’s more things like this:

I’m doing a puzzle right now, and while I’m enjoying it, I’m already looking up which one I want to do next.

My kids are little, and I often find myself envisioning life when they’re older-not savoring their current ages I suppose.

Or instead of appreciating my house, I continuously think of ways I want to make it better.

Perhaps it’s more of a gratitude thing than an in the moment thing?

I think most people do these things. It doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful or not living in the moment, it just means you’re excited for the future.

Look into the teachings of Eckhart Tolle - The Power of Now is a great start.

To each his own... I'm one of those people who takes photos, uses filters, post them on FB, but I don't do it "for show" hell I don't do it for anyone but myself.
I used to feel in the past people did it for that reason, and found myself not doing it because I didn't want people to think that of me.

Then my life changed dramatically. I don't care what anyone says or feels about it anymore. I've been doing so many adventurous things lately that I enjoy them in the moment, but also capture that moment in photos to enjoy again and again.

I'll get home that night or the next day and look at the photos reliving those incredible moments all over again. I post them on FB to share with family and friends that enjoy and ask where will my next adventure be today. Many of those friends and family have since asked to join me on my adventures. Creating even more special moments. Moments that wouldn't have happened if I didn't share them. I prefer myself to look back and see those moments again and again.

I'm sure there's still people that are narrow minded and think...oh God just live in the moment stop taking pictures, or she's just doing it for show. I let them think what they want, because I am not only living my best life now - I'm sharing it too.
