Spin-off to Assistant Gifts - Boss gift?
Does anyone give a gift to their boss? Every year my boss's assistant sends around an email for everyone to chip in to get our boss a gift (gift card). It annoys the crap out of me. He doesn't give gifts to anyone (but he does take the department out to lunch). Is this normal - to get a gift for a boss? I've never worked anywhere that that was a thing.

In 13 years, I've never gotten my boss a gift and my department has never chipped in for a gift for her. She also doesn't get any of us gifts.

I have heard you don't gift up.
Having said that- my boss doesn't even gift down so I refuse to even give him a $10 bottle of wine.
He can go scratch, the cheap ass bastid

You're not supposed to gift up
However, we have an office manager and everyone puts in $10 for her and we get a GC but she really is the best.

That's what I've always thought - but then I feel like if everyone else's name is on the card and mine isn't, it'll look really bad. So annoying!

I oversee approx 20 F/T people. I do not receive gifts from any of them.
I do buy them company-related gifts and have a separate Holiday dinner for them in addition to the full-staff (inc p/t employees) party.
I also do not give or receive anything from my boss.

i've never gifted up.
gift down only.
i do get "co-workers" a token gift. last year, i got them a cute bag of cookies with a bow on it. this year, i got them a cute bottle of hand soap (with a very soft, gender-neutral scent). i'll put a small bow on it and place it on everyone's desk. there are 11 of them. lol since i coupon, these gifts usually run me about $5 total.

In my 34 years of working, I have never given my boss a gift, but have received from some of them.
It is an unwritten rule as gift down, not up.

If she wants to gift up fine- but she shouldn't be expecting others to as well.
And it's annoying too because like you said- then if you are the only one that doesn't give, you look bad.
Everyone should get together and boycott it.
Let her buy her boss her own gift.

Never gift up. I have though bought my boss lunch or breakfast around the holidays just as a thank you but that was because I liked them lol. Otherwise, no gift.

when i first started, one of the other entry level people who had been there longer then me, suggested chipping in, and we bought her a card & she has been my boss ever since so I always get her something. My husband thinks it is weird. She is my friend at this point, so I will probably keep buying her something., but now I will no longer report to her & I won't buy anything for the head manager.
