Hofstra... added major
my cousin's first born is starting the college application process and hofstra is at the top of her list.
a million years ago, i got accepted there... but decided on NYU.
what can i tell them are the pros and cons of the school and/or area?
my cousin is freaking out because her baby wants to go to school on the east coast lol.
her other top choices are:
John Jay
Penn State
University of NH
thanks for any info i can share.
ETA: the field she wants to major in is forensics. Hofstra is the only school of the bunch that offers forensics as a major. i believe UNH offers it as a minor, John Jay doesn't offer the extra curricular she's looking for, and i don't recall the details about Penn State.

Out of those options, Hofstra would be my last choice. What does she plan on majoring in?
If she wants to be in NY, my vote would be John Jay. It's significantly cheaper than Hofstra and it's in the city. No 18 year old moves across the country to live in Uniondale.

I think it really depends what she’s looking to go to school for. I think the major is what drives the school choice sometimes. Also if she isn’t sure, coming 3000 miles from her home isn’t the smartest decision financially. Student loans are AWFUL right now with their interest rates, at least in my circle of friends that graduated 2010/2011. Also if she’s OOS, the tuition is higher at John jay, however Hofstra would still be more. I would have her try and decide why she wants to go to school on the east coast- if it’s to live in NYC, then a city school would be a better option over Hofstra because while it’s close to the city, it’s still a train ride away and not as soon as she walks out her dorm door. In terms of UNH or Penn, again I would really look at what they have to offer and if they have a strong program in her area of concentration. Penn state is huge and if she wants that big university feel, Penn state is a good choice, unh i knownis fairly small compared to Penn, I think they are a very good school. My college roommates sister went there and has a fantastic job

UNH is a great school. Nice sized campus in a fun little area of NH.
But this depends on what she eventually wants to major in.

I got my Masters at Hofstra, it's a great school and I was happy with my program. That being said, it's super expensive and the surrounding area (mostly Hempstead) isn't great. If you stay on campus though, you're fine. The campus is beautiful, the professors are excellent so all around it's a good school, just pricey.

This. I graduated from Hofstra, but I wouldn’t have traveled across the country to go there. If she isn’t going to have a car, she’ll feel stuck because the surrounding towns aren’t that great. Definitely not a nice, walkable college town feel.

I worked there for 3 years and I liked it. I can't speak for the curriculum but the area isn't as bad as others think as long as you have a car. I think the campus itself is safe, but there's not much of a nightlife within a walkable distance. But with a car, you're not far from nicer areas (Mineola, Eisenhower Park, etc).

Exactly. The campus is fine though. My cousin went there (did not dorm) and had no issues, loved the school.

I went there- did not dorm either. The campus itself was very nice and safe. Even the few bars immediately outside the campus were fine and if you went in the opposite direction of Hempstead it was more than fine. Close to Roosevelt Field Mall.
Just like any place, you just have to be alert.
I thought Chicago was amazing and so clean and safe, yet it's like the murder capital of the world in parts.
Washington DC too- you wander outside the main areas, and it gets super scary.
The school was great IMO.
But I don't think I'd fly across the country to attend it. I liked that it was a good school that was close to home for me at the time

I went to Hofstra and loved it. You definitely need a car though, while the campus and dorms are beautiful and safe, there's just not much to do right off campus.
I really loved the school and my experience, but I do wish I had gone somewhere with a lower commuter population because there was never a "community" feeling (ie everyone going to games, team spirit, etc), and a college town would have been nice. I never felt unsafe, or at least any less-safe than anywhere else, walking to the couple of spots we'd go to off-campus
ETA This was all 10 (!!) years ago now.

These are all very different schools and it really depends on what type of college experience she is looking for.
Hofstra-- Suitcase campus. A lot of students stay on campus of the week and go home on weekends. Also, a very large commuter population. Private school price tag without a high quality name.
John Jay- City college. One of the best for Criminology and Forensics. But, it is not a campus school. It is part of the CUNY system. Not sure what the living situation is bc my students lived at home.
Penn State- VERY large school in rural PA. Not located next to Philly. Big on sports.
University of NH: Great college town smaller school but not too small.
What about Qunipiac? They have a great Forensics program as does Eastern Kentucky.

I didn't go to Hofstra but I did ho to Adelphi. That was another commuter school. Alot of students who stayed in dorms their first year said it was lonely on the weekend. Majority of students who did dorm, like myself - would go back home on the weekends. Granted this was ages ago and I think it has changed.
I wouldn't suggest a school like Hofstra/Adelphi for someone coming long distance to study. Only if its like the only school known for Forensic on the east coast or highly rated.
As far as the area, I don't think it's terrible and wouldn't pose that as a con. I mean you have more of chance of something happening in the City.
ETA: for forensics I would go with John Jay - I feel like that is the school known for that field.

Forensics is very broad. Eventually, she’ll need to specialize in one area - genetics, blood spatter etc. . I’d think John Jay is a good place to go.

we have family in the general area.
they will be spending christmas break out there to visit different schools and to see if the young lady can hang in the cold.
i'll be giving my cousin all the info you guys have shared in this thread to help her and her daughter. thanks for all you've shared.

Because I feel the City is a lot more populated and higher chance of something happening. More crazies and bad people, higher probability.
I work in Manhattan and commute every day, grew up in Queens. So it's not that I think its unsafe, I just don't think the city is safer than if a person was going to attend Hofstra.

I have 2 friends that went to John Jay and work/worked in the NYC crime lab.
Of those schools that you noted, I would think Hofstra would be at the bottom of the list.
Personally outside of it being close on LI, I don't see the appeal of Hofstra. Its pricey for what it is, doesn't offer a ton of aid, and doesn't stand out as far as I understand in any particular field.
Plenty of people go there, its not a bad school, but I have no idea why someone would come across the country to go there.

My sister has a degree in forensics from John Jay. She is a QC chemist with a pharmaceutical company. She did her internship there and got hired out of school and worked her way up to running the lab.
I got my law degree from Hofstra, after attending JJ for undergrad. Two completely different experiences.
For forensics I can't imagine a school other than JJ. When I was in undergrad (during the ice age) - it was the only school in the country that offered it as a major.
