ditching the bottle...

DD is ADDICTED to her bottle. She refuses milk in her sippy and the second she tastes anything but water she chucks it across the room. I have tried every sippy there is: oxo tot, a straw cup, 360 cup, you name it. Nothing works! She was 1 in July and it's really something that needs to go.

I tried transitioning to the sippy over Christmas break, caved in only a few hours later, and we continued with the bottle. I told myself by Feb. break the bottle is gone, but I caved again.. Yesterday morning I woke up and decided to just chuck all the bottles in the garbage. She has been napping and sleeping really really well, but hasn't had one sip of milk since I took the bottle away. We can't really make up for it with other dairy because she has a milk allergy. She can eat yogurt because it's processed differently than other milk products, but one yogurt a day just isn't enough. She drinks almond milk.

Has anyone out there had the same problem??

Honestly, I'd just ditch the milk. As long as she eats a balanced diet I wouldn't worry about it.

Honestly, I’d let her keep the bottle a little longer. My ped was fine with my girls keeping the bottle until 2. They both gradually but naturally and easily dropped it by then.

ditching the bottle...

Was she drinking almond milk in the bottle? What nutrients are you worried she’s losing? Anything almond milk has can be easily replaced by adding other foods into her diet (broccoli, oranges, figs) or things fortified with calcium like Cheerios

yeah she was drinking the same in the bottle. and i was just worried because she doesn't eat that much dairy so I wanted to make sure she isn't going to lose out on what she needs. I will continue on with the sippy and see if she takes it eventually! fingers crossed..

And to those who said to let her continue on with it: her pedi said something about how the bottle should have stopped around 1 because it's bad for their teeth or something like that. So I really wanted to take it away

She can get the nutrients in dairy from other food.

We let DD keep her night bottle until just before 2. She has some slight crowding of her front teeth so I wish I'd have pulled it sooner. When we dropped it there wasn't a fight but she doesn't drink much milk anymore. She'll still ask for it occasionally, take 2 sips and say she doesn't want it.

Also unless you put them to bed with a bottle, or they walk around with it hanging out if their mouth all day, I can’t imagine drinking a bottle for a total of 30 mins a day is going to hurt their teeth.

I thought that too but mine really did only have her night bottle and a pacifier just at night to fall asleep then it was out.

Or maybe her teeth are just close together cause those are her teeth Chat Icon

My pediatrician said as long as DD was getting some form of dairy then she was fine. I would stick to the yogurt if she refuses to drink milk feom the cup

Some kids eat no dairy at all because they have milk allergies or are lactose intolerant and they survive just fine.
Calcium can be found in foods other than dairy too.
And as far as the teeth- a few months one way or the other is not going to affect the teeth that significantly unless they are with a bottle in their mouth 24/7

It's probably just her teeth.

My oldest had a bottle until 3. His baby teeth were well spaced but, he needed a palatal expander at 7 because his adult teeth were too big for the space.

As for the bottle - it's easier to take it away when they are younger. DS 1 used his bottle until 3. We didn't take it away because he was a horrible sleeper and that's what he used to unwind before bedtime.

DS 2 we took away at 15 months and it was easy peasy. He didn't drink milk for a couple of days but, he then began drinking milk from his sippy.

This makes me feel so much better. DD is 2 in April and still sucking on that damn bottle, though only at nap time and bed time. But she still wails for it.

As for drinking milk, I don't let her have milk in the bottle because I worry about her teeth. For awhile after that, she refused milk, but eventually came around to drinking it on occasion. I think if you're LO has a balanced diet, she should be fine.

I always tell the story of how we tried to take it away at 12 months because that is what "THEY" say you should do. It was a nightmare! she was screaming, thrashing around, stiffening up her body. It was like a drug addict going through withdrawals, no joke.
We finally had no choice but to give it back because she was a mess. It was horrible to see.
3 months later, at 15 months, I came home from work one day and DH was like- yeah, no more bottles.
I was like WHAT?
He said he just told her as they were leaving for a walk that there was no more bottles, and she would have her milk in a cup. And he handed her a sippy of milk for the stroller and she took it.
Without a peep.
When they are ready, they are ready.
Forcing matters only causes more stress on them and on you.

It could be...my younger DD never had a pacifier, rarely had a bottle, and has very very close teeth.

Ugh, I hope DD is ready soon. I'm done with bottles! But that's how it was with her pacifier. She just one day decided she didn't need it and never asked for it again. And that was after I had tried to take it away about a month or two earlier.

ETA: But DD is sneaky. She knows she's only allowed them for naps, so she lays down on the couch randomly with a pillow and blanket and says she's sleepy so she gets a bottle. When she finishes it she gets up and hands me the bottle and says "I'm fine, no baba." Chat Icon Crafty little bugger.

Re: ditching the bottle...

I guess I wouldn't stress either way. My daughter gave up bottles of breastmilk before the age of 1 and also had no interest in any alternative milk option out of a sippy. She breastfed till around 15 months and that was the end of any "milk". She just drank water in a sippy cup, didn't like juice or milk/milk subs. My son took soy milk in a bottle (again refused any milk in a sip) after he weaned and gave up the bottle around 22 months (only had his soy milk in it at night and than we'd brush his teeth). After that he also gave up milk. Around 3 he started liking chocolate milk. Remember milk after weaning is not needed.

As PP said, milk is not necessary. My son only has milk on occasion. I did however do extended nursing with him. He was VERY difficult To wean and only did so after he turned 3.
