4 year old wetting bed

This is long... Sorry in advance.

Background- My 4.5 year old JUST became potty trained around his 4th birthday. He's been in underwear since around 3.5, but we have always had to remind him up pee. He was having daily accidents up until about a month ago. He finally got the hang of it, but he's still having accidents EVERY NIGHT. He wears a goodnight, but it doesn't absorb all the pee he does. He doesn't regularly nap during the day, but occasionally he will fall asleep. He has no accidents when he naps during the day. I change his sheet, every night. He gets new PJs, every night. His room smells so bad all the time because of the pee. He sleeps 12 hours and is a very deep sleeper.

What do I do? I've tried eliminating liquids closer to bed (even though so much of what I read says it doesn't really affect), but then it's a war to go to bed since he's the thirstiest person in the world directly before bed. Please help me!!!

4 year old wetting bed

I think my son was in nighttime pull ups until he was 4.5 or 5. I think some kids just aren't ready to be fully night time potty trained until they're a little older. He's almost 8 now and he wets the bed rarely (maybe less than 10 times a year).

My DD didn't night train till a little after 5 and I had to work on it. She was the one who told me she no longer wanted to wear pull ups.

I had to wake her up every night around 11ish to get her up to pee sometime I went to late. She still sometimes had accidents even when I did this. Eventually she started getting up on her own and then going through the night. She still has her occasional accidents. Especially if she doesnt pee right before bed.

I should also note she was fully potty trained during the day by 2 but we could not get night time down. (I also stop trying for a while)

my DS is still potty training after a year or more of doing this. He will be 4 in November . Chat Icon Chat Icon

We have him in nighttime pullups, but he pees through them every night. I'll gladly put him in other ones, but I need something that's going to hold all his pee.

he is wear the older kid version of them? My mom has this problem with my nephew so she switched from pullup to the older kid version of pullups and I think that one works much better.

I never had leaks with pampers overnights and used them til DS was 6.

We used Wet Stop bedtime alarm for night time training (but at around 6 & he was fully daytime trained since 26 months). It worked... but sounds like your kid is just learning the connection between urge & go. I'd wait a bit longer and use more absorbing diapers.

Night training is completely developmental and there is really nothing you can do...unfortunately it will happen when he's ready.

ETA have you tried using a diaper doubler?

My 3 & 4 year old are both potty trained and are both still in pull ups/diapers at night. According to the pediatrician, it is completely normal for them, their body just doesnt know to wake them up to pee. I believe he said this can last until they are 5 (or 6 - I cannot recall what he said, i just knew i still had time and it was normal).
In terms of what you can put him in during the night, we have ds in overnight diapers (they hold more than pull ups with a diaper liner we get these from bru this keeps ds dry all night (dd is in a pull up and stays dry - i guess she pees less than him)

Yes I have heard this. It is not something you can really fix until they are developmentally ready.
And it's more prevalent in boys than girls.
I read an article about it and it said this:

Sometimes the link between the bladder and the brain isn't fully developed yet, and more boys than girls tend to be bedwetters because girls mature faster.

From what I know from my friends and family- it's very common in boys

My DS is 3.5 and not night trained. He still wears a regular diaper to bed - I of course bought a new box right before he potty trained in January. He rarely leaks through.

Thanks for the replies. He wears overnights to bed. He's a big boy, so I might just need to size up. I'm not really stressing the fact that he still wears a diaper overnight; I'm just really trying to figure out how to keep him from peeing through it to save me from doing laundry almost daily and from having his bedroom smell like a urinal! I'll definitely look into sizing up and getting diaper liners. Thanks!!

BRU sells the diaper doublers. We used to use those at night when she was little.
They look like big old school maxi pads

diaper doubler - may want to try using 2-3 each night
depends liners
along with night time waterproof training pants over

for the bed, have you tried using a large waterproof pad over the sheets? I have a few from BRU that are washable, but I see that they make disposable ones that are very large. good nights makes them, and a few others.

Bed wetting at this age is more a brain maturity issue then limiting liquids or behavioral.

Some brains take longer to mature insomuch as the brain is not waking your son with the urge to go to the bathroom. I would not concern yourself with it and can take a few more years to develop.

As far as the pullups, maybe try doubling them up.

Re: 4 year old wetting bed

If you can go up a size in the Goodnights, try that. You might have better luck with Underjams. One of them worked better for us that the other, but I don't remember which (I think the Goodnights were better). Or, maybe try using the Huggies Overnights. These were WAY better than the Goodnights, but DD outgrew them, so I had to go to the pullup style of the Goodnights. I think he will be too small for the medical ones from Amazon. I JUST had to order them for my DD bc she is 8 (65lbs) and has really outgrown the Pampers/Huggies. She has a developmental disorder, so IF potty training ever happens, it will definitely be late. We will be making it a priority when school starts in September.
