C-Section Moms: How long was your hospital stay?

Just curious how many days/nights you stayed in the hospital after your c-section. With DS1, I stayed 4 nights plus an overnight from the induction, but he was in the NICU and wasn't released until the evening that I was discharged. With DS2, I wasn't expecting my doctor to say I could go home after the third night so I decided to stay the extra night to recover more and not have to worry about stairs yet. I had my pre-op appointment for my upcoming c-section and my doctor mentioned that many people decide to go home after 3 nights.

How long did you stay in the hospital and what made you decide to stay longer or be released earlier? If you had multiple c-sections, how did your recoveries compare to each other?

I have had 3 sections. My 1st recovery was the hardest. The second 2 were much better. I only stayed 2 nights for all 3. 1st one because I hated the hospital and the care I was receiving. The second 2 I went to a different hospital that was much better but my kids are all 19 months apart so I was always anxious to get home to the other ones because they were so little. I had to push each time to get released after 2 days. I think they normally want you to stay for 3.

First time, I stayed 4 nights (plus one while in labor); the 2nd one I stayed 3 because it was when you had to pay out of pocket for the private room and I didn't tell DH it was $500/night Chat Icon Needless to say, when he found out...ummm...well, I didn't stay the last night Chat Icon The last time I stayed 3 nights because my DDs were going to a Halloween party on what would have been the 4th night and I didn't want to miss seeing them dressed up.

Re: C-Section Moms: How long was your hospital stay?

I had 2 c-sections, stayed 3 nights both times.

Both recoveries were the same for me - the only truly painful part for me was getting out of the bed the first time and each time for the next day or so. By the 3rd day, I felt OK as long as I kept up on the pain meds and by the time I was home, I really only needed some motrin in the morning and at night.

I didnt feel I needed to stay an additional night - plus I paid for a private room the 2nd time (due to a bad experience with a room mate the first time)...so I also didnt want to pay for another night :)

I had my cs late on a Sunday night and went home Friday afternoon. I stayed as long as they'd let me bc dd was in the nicu and not being discharged yet.

Having your third, I would probably think of it as taking that extra time alone with the newborn. Once you go home, you're not going to get that often. As much as I missed dd1 (with dd2 in thru nicu I didn't even have her come visit at all) it was nice to be able to focus on the baby and my older one survived without me.

2 nights and I would have left earlier if they let me. My Dr said I was entitled to more time but I hated every moment of being there and I felt fine.

OMG I didn't have a C but I wish I could have stayed in the hospital for a month!

They took the baby at night, my meals were served to me, I got waited on, brought any meds I needed, I got to lay in bed and watch TV, no waking up 6 times a night to the screaming newborn.

I would stay as long as humanly possible! It's like vacation!

Not including induction with number 1, 3 nights for both. I really wanted to stay a 4th with DS2 because I love the hospital and wanted to relax lol, but it was Halloween and I wanted to see ds1 all dressed up.

Recovery wasn't bad with either but DS2 was easier because it was planned.

Unless things have changed with the setup in 5 years, my hospital only has private rooms. The one thing that has changed though is now they have a rooming in policy. I was happy to send both kids to the nursery at night so I could recover from the c-section and the nurses brought them back when they needed to eat. I'm not thrilled about the policy now because DH will be home at night with the kids and I know how tough the recovery is at the beginning. I'm hoping the nurses will still be able to take the baby for a little while at night or at least help because I can't imagine getting in and out of bed with the baby and positioning both of us to BF on my own without being in a lot of pain the first night or two.

Thanks for the replies. Part of me wants to stay as long as possible before getting home to chaos and another part of me thinks going home earlier will at least allow DH to help out at night.

What hospital? I can only speak for Southside since thats where I delivered. I had also heard of the new "rooming in" policy, but it turned out the nurses were happy to take the baby at night when I needed so I could get some sleep. They helped me me breast feed him because i was having trouble...they really were wonderful. I think sometimes you luck out and get really wonderful nurses and sometimes not so lucky! My first experience, the nurses were awful...I was amazed the 2nd time around.

I delivered at Southside too but in 2010. They didn't really "advertise" that they'd take the baby but you bet your ass that at 10 pm when DH was leaving, I would call them up and tell them to come take her. And they would. Not sure if they were thrilled about it but Eff that shit. I'm the customer, paying more than the Ritz for a night in this place, do what I ask.

I stayed 3 nights with my first two but for ds3 I stayed four nights. I wanted to go home on a weekday so I could settle in without the chaos of the big kids there.

I'm in CT. Even though it's a different hospital, that's reassuring that you had a good experience and kind nurses to help out. Thanks!

Technically 4 but they were born at 10pm the first night (Tuesday) went home Saturday morning. One of my twins was in NICU/intermediate care for about 48 hours but was sprung to the regular nursery before I was sent home. My dr told me he could have kept me another night if it was necessary for us to go home together but thankfully that was not the case.

DD was born late on Sunday night, and I went home on Wednesday night. While the nurses were great, the constant noise in the hospital did not let me get any meaningful rest. I was getting very emotional too (I heard hormones generally kick in on that 3rd day and I was an absolutely wreck) and just wanted to get the hell out of there. Im due in November with DC 2 - and while I want to have a VBAC- we shall see. I imagine if I have another C, I'll want to get home and start trying some normalcy -- DD is also fairly attached to me, so it'll be difficult to leave her for days.

3 nights. I had some cardiac issues and was basically tortured my entire stay (and hardly saw DD). I couldn't wait to get out of there. My recovery was fine, I was walking around the next day.

Also I delivered at NSUH in December 2015. They encouraged me to send the baby to the nursery so I could sleep. I have no plans for a second but if aliens invaded my brain and I did, I would not deliver at a hospital without a nursery under any circumstances. Hospitals are not doing this to promote "bonding and bf-ing" they're doing it to save money.

I had a C-section with DD after a failed induction. I was technically there for 3 nights (went in the night before DD was born as my water broke), but stayed 2 nights after the actual c-section. I asked me ob to discharge me and he was fine w/ it.

I stayed 3 nights for both c sections. They don't advertise it but yes allowed me to send my kids to the nursery at night. They encouraged me to keep them especially since I was breastfeeding and they said oh but we'll have to give them formula then. I said yeah that's fine. I was exhausted.

When I had my 3rd, my 17 month old twins were home. DH obv couldn't stay with me at hospital. At 8pm I asked them to bring him to the nursery. The nurses were like don't you want to wait until a little later? I said nope. Caught up on tv and eventually passed out. They brought him in at 6:30am. I was still sleeping. I was like I have to shower. Please take him back and I'll call when I get out of the shower.Chat Icon

Yep! 100%. Hospitals are big business and to think they give a shit about anything but their bottom line is naive.
Hence this new push for breastfeeding and not giving out formula. Saves money.
But I would have sent DH to Target if they refused to give me formula. Fuk that shit
