DC hotels
Want to visit DC with kids. Is anyone familiar with the areas of the city? If so where should I look for a hotel? We will be taking public transport around town (sightseeing bus tour, spy museum, zoo).
We are taking amtrak fromNYC

We stayed in Arlington, VA on the other side of the Key Bridge. While our hotel wasn't great (Holiday Inn), the location was perfect as it was walking distance from Georgetown and a Metro stop. Next time we go, we are going to stay at the Marriot Key Bridge.

We stayed at the Omni Shoreham which is walking distance to the zoo and has a metro station close to reach all other areas. The room was large and they had a nice pool, kids loved it.

Re: DC hotels
We stayed in Dupont Circle- it is more of a residential, quiet area and has a metro stop right there which takes you to the sightseeing areas very easily. I found the subway system in DC SO much nicer, cleaner, and easier to navigate than NYC too This was before we had DD though

We stayed at the Omni Shoreham as well. The pool was great, especially since we were there at the end of august. We took Amtrak too-so easy. The kids loved it.

Re: DC hotels
We like the Hilton in Crystal City. It has the metro station connected to it. It has an indoor outdoor pool.

We stayed in the National Harbor area. Took a cab from Amtrak to there, and it was about $15. Very nice area, and the Gaylord is gorgeous! But, if you are doing DC each day, probably gets too expensive in cab rides.

Re: DC hotels
I would look for something in the Dupont Circle/Woodley Park area. That's an easy ride from Union Station on the red Metro line. Georgetown is also nice, but less accessible by Metro. There are also some great hotels near the Metro Center and Gallery Place Metro stops that will keep you in the center of the action, but those tend to be $$$.
There's another hotel near Omni Shoreham called Marriott Wardman Park. Looks nice, I've never stayed there though...

Amtrak goes into Union Station. So from there you'd take the Metro. Probably a 30-40 minute ride.
I've stayed at the Sheraton in Pentagon City. It was really nice. Has an indoor rooftop pool. Has nice view of DC/Pentagon.

Re: DC hotels
We have stayed a couple of times in the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center. It is one block away from the Spy Museum, good restaurants around, and has an indoor pool.

I've stayed at the Key Bridge Marriott - it's really nice although a little expensive considering its distance from the sites, especially the ones you mentioned. I have also stayed at the Courtyard Rosslyn in the same area and that was nice as well. There's no full service restaurant like there is at the Key Bridge Marriott but you're probably not eating at your hotel much anyway. There is a little cafe that has snacks, some sandwiches, and Starbucks drinks. It has a nice indoor pool/hot tub and was very clean.
Amtrak to Arlington/Rosslyn is probably 30-40 minutes like another poster said. You'll change from the red line to the blue/orange/silver line at Metro Center. (I find the DC Metro a million times more user friendly than the NYC subway and I'm familiar with both.)
If you're on a budget, I would definitely consider the Rosslyn/Arlington area because the metro is right there and it's super easy to use. If you can spend a little more then it might be nice to try and get more centrally located.

FYI, if you decide to drive instead, the Holiday Inn had free parking.

Re: DC hotels
We stayed at the Embassy Suites by Hilton when we went. They have an indoor pool, buffet breakfast that's included, a happy hour where they serve complimentary wine, beer and snacks and walking distance to almost everything. We walked to the WH from the hotel and all around it, museums, etc. Lots of great restaurants too. WE went with friends and the kids (at the time were 6 and 4) had a great time.
