When can I give peanut butter?

Ask your ped- everyone has a different suggestion these days! A friend of mine gave it at 6mo because her ped said if they're introduced early it reduces the chances of allergies. My ped says to wait until 1 because if you introduce it too early it could cause allergies or make allergies worse. I introduced DS1 at 1 year and he was fine. I introduced DS2 at 10 months and he has an allergy though it didn't show up until his 4th or 5th time having it.

When can I give peanut butter?

Whenever you feel comfortable. For me it was just DS being able to eat it since it's thick and sticky. I was never worried about allergies.

FWIW, nut allergies don't run in my family but we found out DS was allergic to peanuts (and 3 other nuts), so just watch for reactions the first time you give it.

I was actually told that a reaction is more likely the second or third time they're given nuts-- so be aware the first couple of exposures

When can I give peanut butter?

If your child had a reaction, what kind? First time we gave it to my DD no issues. 2nd time she had a rash on her chin a little while later, not sure if it was related so we r going to wait a day and try again. Scary trial and error!!

Re: When can I give peanut butter?

My peds said the earlier the better and had me introduce it around 6mos. But some still proscribe to waiting.

My DS is severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. First time he had peanut butter, he got one small hive and a mildly swollen eyelid. I didn't know he was allergic and didn't think much of it (it was a delayed reaction). The second time, his whole face started to swell and he got very lethargic. It was the scariest day of my life. And we had no kids Benadryl in the house!

I always recommend having Benadryl in the house when trying it. And be on the look out for: hives, swelling of the lips/eyes/face, upset stomach (vomiting), lethargy, trouble breathing, etc. If you are concerned, you could ask about giving it the next time in the Dr office, or ask an allergist for skin testing. Good luck!

Re: When can I give peanut butter?

When people are ready to give their LOs peanut butter, a great food is the Bamba peanut butter puffs. All natural, 5g protein per service (which is a big serving but still.) And easy to eat!

If the rash appeared shortly after ingestion, I would have her tested. That's how my son's reaction was (red blotchy spots on mouth/neck area that cleared up within 10 minutes) and he is allergic to peanuts, walnuts and pecans.

Yes, it worries me alot. I am going to mention it to our ped at the next appointment. I pray she is not allergic! Ugh!!!
