Is this odd or is it me? Picture day related
So DD has had 2 picture days a year in daycare since she was an infant. They swithced companies a few times, but it was always the same. Come in on picture day, dressed up, etc. Sign the form giving permission for pics to be taken.
A few weeks later, they either email you a link with the pictures and you can decide what or even if you want to order at all, or with another company they used, they print out a bunch of pics in all the poses and you come to see them at the school and decide which, if any, you want
This year DD is in K and I got a notice yesterday that picture day is coming up. Fine.
But they sent an envelope for checks and listed out all the packages you can buy and also showed all the backgrounds.
You have to pick which background you want your child photographed on, ok fine but you also have to pick which package you want to purchase. Now. Before the pics are even taken.
And you have to send in the check for the amount on picture day.
So pretty much I have to commit to and pay for pictures that I haven't even seen yet.
Is this normal?

Totally normal...my kids preschool, elementary school, and sports pics all are taken that way. It stinks you don't get to see them before you purchase. the only exception I have found is DD's dance pics. Those you get to go online and see ahead of time.

Normal. A lot of schools do this. You pick the package and background first, send it back with the check to school before it's even picture day. They usually do a good job picking the best picture. I usually go for a cheaper package... who needs wallet size pics, touch-ups or magnets?

OMG they still do it the same as when I was a kid!
Yeah you pick the package you want... Send a check and hope the pics come out good!
Remember the laser rod background?!!
I always wanted that and my mom wouldn't let me

OK. I guess I was just used to how it was done in daycare all these years so I was confused by it.
I guess it's normal for elementary schools though.

Yes totally normal. If you do not like the pictures though you can return them and get your money back minus the class picture cost.

In daycare they did it that way for DS. You were committed to a pkg before seeing the picture.
Thankfully DS's elem school takes pics, you get the proof a couple of wks later and then decide what pkg you want.

Yes, that's how it is in elementary schools usually . But I think they offer a make up day to retake the photo if you don't like how the first one comes out.

Normal - in our school if you don't like the fall pics they do a retake
Then in the spring you only pay for them if you like them

Yup totally normal. And very annoying. Today you should be able to view them online first. I hate it. Dads preschool is like this. But it's very $$$ and I do t like the photographer but I have to get pictures.

Yes, that's standard. Most schools will do a retake day if you are not happy with the first picture.

Yes in my son's daycare they did the same as you said your daughter's did --- which was SO much better.
Schools should take a lesson lol!

That is how we have always had picture day for both preschool and elementary school. Totally normal.
I always buy the class picture and a small package.

Thats the way it is done in most elementary schools. There will be a retake day if you don'r like the photos.

Stupid right!! In this day and age, they can't just put the proofs online and let us pick?! They usually come out crappy, then I have to do a re-take. My son has special needs, and dislikes strangers, so he always looks SCARED in his pics. I can take better pics myself, but I always feel like I HAVE to get them!
The spring pics they send home the actual photos, then you choose if you want them or not.
Oh, and this is good. My son's HS pics last year were MAILED to my house in a regular envelope, all bent up! So stupid of them! They sent me new ones, but really...in a regular envelope?!

Well.. yes and no.
I just had picture day last week and it was like you described, pick pose, background, package and pay now. Like them or not, you own them.
But she's in 2nd grade and honestly this is the FIRST time it's been like this. Twice a year every year, same school since Kinder and this is the first time I feel like "sure hope they are alright" because I have no choice. Odd.
But this is Lifetouch or whatever. I know we had different vendors before, maybe?
I had to ARGUE with my husband over this because he SWORE I was crazy for sending in a check and picking poses. How do you know which one she'll look good in? I *HAVE* to choose now and her background and I *HAVE* to like it and hope that she's posed in a flattering way. because as of today I OWN IT! LOL
Then again, I also pay a lot for pro shots so I worry little over these.
