I'm currently taking two online grad courses through St. John's to get an extension towards my teaching certificate. The classes are pretty intense, much more so than when I actually received my graduate degree.

All of our papers must be posted to a discussion forum, and we are supposed to comment on/critique each other. The professors encourage us to go beyond positive reinforcement of our peers, since that is what many people do. Much of the information for our papers comes from sources the professors provide, although we were encouraged to pick up a specific text book for the course

Tonight we had a paper due, and as I was reading through responses I noticed something. One of the other participants plagiarized a large portion of her paper. Part of her paper was cited from another source, and this is post-graduate work so it's not as if people don't know how to cite information. Most people haven't been using the textbook as a source, but the provided materials this time weren't pariculatly useful so I did additional research on my own, which is why I recognized the phrasing.

What would you do? I'm torn

Re: Wwyd

Privately write an email to your professor. You have an honors/ethics agreement that you signed. I would ask if he runs papers through plagiarism checkers and to remind the class that he/she does this so if someone needs to double check their work that might be an oversight.

I'm a post graduate student too, if I were in your shoes I would just write a private email. It's very easy to confirm plagiarism. Besides you don't have to write it in an accusatory manner just think you read it and it looked like it was taken from a place you were doing research or something like that

I agree with the others. The professor might even have noticed it already, but I would bring it to their attention.

Am I a terrible person that I might just comment on the forum that whatever portion should have been quoted or cited? Sorry but a teacher needs to know better and you're being asked to critique. If others noticed they should see it addressed too. I've seen how some teachers slack in these classes and it annoys me so maybe that's part it for me.

Personally, I would mind my own business. What do you want to benefit from that? I get maybe you worked hard on your paper and whatnot but I just dont involve myself in that stuff. I worry about me and my work, not others . Just my opinion.

Could you message her? Maybe she doesn't realize that she didn't site the source properly? I would do that before I went to a professor.

I feel the same way .... Who cares what someone else is doing. Just worry about your own work/life.

I'm so torn. Obviously this woman knows it's wrong, and as a teacher its hard for me to ignore something like this. I firmly believe in academic integrity.

That being said, I feel like a bit of a snitch and St. John's isn't particularly cheap if she gets kicked out of the class

I too agree. Instead of spending this time being torn

Focus on yourself/ your own work. It's not your place.

My daughters high school teachers run all their papers through a plagiarism checker online and it spits out a percentage of plagiarized material. I'm surprised they don't do this in college as well, maybe its not as common a problem in college.

When I was in college we had an honor code that basically said that if you know about cheating you should report it. I think the rule even stated that if you knew cheating was occurring and you didn't report it you could see consequences as well. I think given how hard those who are following the rules are working you should report it. You can do it anonymously via email if you are not comfortable but I think

why say something, because when you work your ass off to get good grades and use the honor system and see others taking a short cut and maybe getting the same grade is the worsts. I can see why you would want to say something. TOO many people from high school up cheat. Either mention it to your professor or critic her/him on the forum, by asking where they got that info from.

too many people in this world mind their business but then will complain when shit goes south.

I agree with this. I also would not want the school to name or involve me in this either if they kicked the girl out of the school program or something. The professor may ask you where you saw or read the information she allegedly plagiarized from. I also would not email this girl about it. Why would you want to put something like that in writing? If she does get in trouble with the school, she probably will think of you as telling on her especially if you had emailed her prior. That might appear that you are accusing her of cheating. Also, you do not know how she will react towards you about this. That would make me feel a little uneasy, especially if she is bold enough to possibly cheat on her coursework. I would just worry about yourself and let the professor worry about all of you.

Maybe I was the only one who was graded on a curve in college, but if she gets an A, that is one less that I have a chance of getting

I guess I believe in the honor code regardless of whether it is a "policy"

I'd email the professor

I feel in life, too many people just mind their business on "real" things and get in everyone's business on petty crap.
