WWYD - Kid room & Playroom Setup

What would you do.

The home we are closing on in less than 3 weeks has three bedrooms.

My son is four (if that helps in the decision making process)

Bedroom #2 is 12.2 x 11.6 with a large closet (racks, almost walk in)

Bedroom #3 is 15 x 13 with no closet.

I am either going to have bedroom #2 be the office or my son's room and give him bedroom #3 as it is bigger.

In thinking about it more, I am thinking of making bedroom #2 his bedroom (for the closet space) and have bedroom #3 the office/playroom.

I am not sure what an office/playroom will be like, if it will be a match made in heaven (I work from home some days) or if it will be an ultimate clutter disaster.

There are many mixed reviews as I am 'googling' this idea - so I figured where was the best place to get information from actual moms but here

Thanks for any input/help. This whole home buying/decorating/arranging process has my brain on a whole other level....

I agree with giving your son the room with the closet. I think a closet is a must.

Not sure I would combine an office and a playroom. Sounds like it could get pretty tricky, with a computer, wires etc. The room sounds like a good size though, so maybe you could make it work if things are kept very separate..which would be hard to do.

Before you know it, the "toy" room will be mostly electronics anyway, so I think having the computer/office in there is a good match for the long term. As long as the desktop is clear, you can keep the toy mess on the floor, and still be able to get to the desk to work. Then, in a few years, when it's all about video games, you'll have the wiring and networking all set up in that room already.

we did an office/ playroom in our bigger extra BR. however it's mostly office/guest room right now (since baby R isn't born yet) and idk if it's going to work for much time.... Later we will finish re-finishing the basement and use that for a playroom, probably give him the bigger room and have the littler bedroom for a new nursery? :)

We thought of doing the office/playroom combo but I have too much work stuff in there. I also keep all of dd's good paper books in there and any other things I don't want her hands on. Toys are in her room and in our den. I was glad I didn't make the combo because when kids come over I don't have to worry about them touching my work stuff since that room is closed off.

We don't have a playroom.

At 4, DS brings his toys to wherever we are, so I have a corner in our living room for his stuff (and his sister's) and we put toys out of circulation in the closet. We had a guestroom/plaroom for a bit & he never wanted to play in there.

If you work from home, do put up a separate office.

I think it depends if you actaully use it WFH or are using it as a home office space. If you actaully work from home I would not do this. IMO and experience, I WFM and need my own personal space. I have many work related content, whiteboard, technology that wouldn;t mix well with a young kid who likes to get into everything. Also, you have to think about if you can effectively work if you had your child home and they wanted to play in their playroom.

If you are using it as home office for personal use than I think it is fine and would do it.

We have a 3 BR house, one is the master. Of the other 2 we used the larger as a playroom. In our house, the BR is for sleeping, that's it. No toys, no TV, no playing. So it made more sense to have the larger room for the playroom. If/when we have another child, they will share the BR and we will keep the playroom.
We also have a finished basement, but that is the man/mom cave and we won't give it up

Give him the closet room. Id rather have a bigger play room/computer room and you can always use toy storage units there. You need some place to hang some clothes.

Re: WWYD - Kid room & Playroom Setup

See my kids closets have always been empty except for extra clothes and toys! I fold all their clothes. They dont really like button ups so I have a few of those but thats it! So I vote to make the playroom/office with the closet. At least for now while hes little, then all the toy clutter can go in the closet and you have a nice clean office.

Re: WWYD - Kid room & Playroom Setup

I would say to just be aware that sometimes practicality of wall space is a bigger deal than room size. We are putting dd in the smaller of the bedrooms in our new house, but the way the room is laid out, there's so so much more you can do with the space.
