So is this good contract news????

The wait is over! We have reached a tentative nine-year contract agreement with the DOE that includes 18 percent in raises, including full retroactivity, plus a $1,000 cash bonus. The agreement makes teacher evaluations simpler and fairer. And it gives educators new opportunities to innovate, more voice in school decision-making, and more time to carry out their professional responsibilities without adding any new time to the workday. Our agreement is the product of a shared belief that when we educators are empowered to use our professional expertise, we can solve our common challenges and develop new ways to improve outcomes for our students. The proposed contract is pending Municipal Labor Committee approval on health benefits and ratification by the UFT membership. Read the details on our website at www.uft.org/contract-2014.

I am glad for those of you who are with the DOE.

Now I want to know if I'd be entitled to retro from 2009 until I quit in 2012. They are giving 4% for 2009 and 2010.

I am not going to lie. I am not sure I am happy with it. I still think there needed to be more information shared. I only began working for the DOE in 2012. The 1% for 2013 does not even get me 1000. I am so happy to have a job but I spend more in supplies than my raise.

Not gonna lie....disappointed! Why should we have to wait for retro money that we have already earned. That should be the first money given out and in a lump sum. They are making money off our interest to say the least. Having to wait until 2015 to receive my 2009 retro is ludacris! Also NYC budgets in 2% every year to cover the cost of living...so why is that not trickling down to us? We are now going to have 4 PTC conferences and they are going from 2.5 hrs to 3hrs! This is a bunch of crap!

Also where is the reduced class size....I find this really important! Having 31 second graders is too much!!! Also I am sick and tired of having no already written out curriculum with tons of resources to teach with....grr

The part where they mention allowing 10% of schools to be "innovative" by not following Union rules or contract scares me...

There is a lot of language that needs clarity for me.

But the raises sound okay. I agree with the lump sum but that would be taxed much higher so we will actually get more money this way.

That 10%worries me also. Is his their way of slowly trying to get rid of unions. Next contract they may say20% with no union rules.

Re: So is this good contract news????

Has anyone found the raise amount for 2012? I saw every other year but not then.

Also what does single/multi session mean?

Lastly is there an actual contract out there or are we just looking at the uft's summaries? I want to read the wording myself rather than just their spin.

So is this good contract news????

I feel like the changes in the health benefits have not been explained. The retro won't even start until 2015. The extra money for certain teachers has me concerned. Who/How will it be decided who will be the master teacher and get the $20,000 extra each year. I need more details on this whole thing before I can even say it's so great.

I'm not sure that individuals that quit will receive retro payments. I don't think they did in the last contract?

I wonder about retirees. My cousin was an SLP and retired in 2013. How will this affect her retirement?

I think 2012 is a 0% year.

Single/multi session refers to the number of start times in a school day. I worked in a HS that was on triple session. So students' (and teachers') days started and ended at all different times. Classes were in session from 7am to after 4. Schools that are very overcrowded tend to use this method to maximize use of classroom space.

It sucks! Don't be fooled. I overheard a conversation I was not meant to hear in the principals office today. The only on paper is different then what we'd see. Plus the principal will have ultimate say in those 80 minutes twice a week. Could end up being a very long day for us. Oh and union dues will increase

So is this good contract news????

So the "raise" is the union due raise..nice..I feel we are being sold out again and other unions will be rightfully cranky if their contracts have to do with ours...they got genuine raises in the years we did not...

I'm not a DOE teacher (I teach in a district on Long Island) but I don't think I would be too thrilled with this contract. I have a lot of DOE family members and they are underwhelmed by the settlement.

I want to see EVERY page before I can accept their conclusion of a "good" contract. What are our give backs? How is the city saving on healthcare? Why isn't the extended PTC conferences more widely known?

p.s. a previous poster mentioned the retro for those who resigned...I don't know how they'll get away with it, but I heard that retro will only be paid to those who retired, not those who resigned. Personally, I don't know how that works, if those individuals worked during the time frame that the retro is being offered. I see lawsuits coming, if that is the case.

I completely agree! I don't know how they can deny money to people who are entitled to it since they worked for the DOE during that time period. I foresee a class action suit.

This happens frequently in contract negotiations. My dad, who was In the NY DEA, lost thousands of dollars on retirement because the retro was not applied to retirees. Very unfair, I agree!

Just to clarify, not all NYC charters do not have contracts and are not in the union.

I work for one that is part of the UFT so we have the same contract, pay scale, benefits, etc.

I am not happy, especially since we have to wait so long for our retro. Other unions in the past have gotten their retro in a lump sum.

I can deal with waiting for the retro. What I can't wait for is the raise. We will not even see the full 10% raise until 2016 and only get a 2% raise this year. It is BS. I say renegotiate. WE are waiting for our money anyway.

Re: So is this good contract news????

DH is a teacher and worked every year there was no contract. Come July, he will be an AP and under a different union. Does this mean he will see no retro at all?

On the one hand, I am so glad to be free of the DOE that I don't really care- but it's typical of them to try and screw people. I do hope the retirees get it. Logic tells me I worked during that period, so it would make sense to it but I am not surprised that I'm not.

Retirees get it, but not people that quit/were terminated.
