I completely agree.
I would see this point, but I can't with this example.
He said this during an SNL opening act andddddddddddddd........it was in regards to Django Unchained..where he plays a freed slave. Based on where he said this (comedic situation) and in context to a slave movie........I give him a pass.
I respectfully disagree. What if it was switched and Christoph Walz said "I got to beat up black guys, it was fun" do you think that would go over well? I don't think so. That bit wouldn't ever be green lighted for a monologue.
I see that side. I guess because with the content of the movie, I read it as he got retribution with the white men.
I find it hard also to distinguish the line between ill-intent and comedy when it comes to race and comedians. For example, I love Lisa Lampanelli, and I know she's not racist, but she sure says a lot of bad things regarding race and stereotypes.
She is an equal opportunity offender.

it's def a good way to describe her! I loooooooooove her but sometimes I can't believe what she says, but her crowds are always mixed in races and stuff and it's a great time. I agree with that. My friends and I all have that kind of relationship where we joke with each other about our different stereotypes and we can all laugh because we think it's all so ridiculous. WE know who we are. We know what we are and are not and a word isn't going to change that for us.
When katt williams talks about spanish people vs. white people vs. black people, I laugh my azz off. it doesn't offend me. Or Louis CK talking about those bad words. I laugh and I totally get what they are saying.
However, of course if someone directed that at me in a hateful way of course I'd be upset, which is what paula deen did. What she said wasn't comical at all. It was hateful and mean.

I am not defending Paula Deen here but does anyone else find it odd that the women who is bringing charges up against her worked for her for 5 years. I am sorry but unless Paula was holding her hostage dont you think she would have left earlier? The accusations are from many years ago and was nothing from current times from what I read.
So much for innocent until proven guilty. This country has so many double standards its crazy.

I don't understand what that has to do with anything? She said and did those things, admitted to saying and doing those things and lost her job so the company she works for can protect their reputation. I can tell you if she worked at my office and these things came to light, the result would be the same. Has she been charged with anything?
As for the other comment about the employee... maybe she stayed there to build a case so no one else would have to be victimized by Deen. Maybe she couldn't get another job somewhere else... it's not always that easy... especially the past few years. Maybe she was diabetic and needed the medical insurance. Either way, she has the right to sue. Do I personally agree with it? No, I think Americans are waaaaaaaaaaay too litigious for their own good, but they have every right to sue if they so choose.

I agree with this point too. I think this employee wants to hit the jackpot & probably will.
Do I agree with what she said, absolutely not. I hope this is a lesson to her that you just cannot say these things. I think she's sorry because she got caught. But she is a human being, she's not perfect. We all have our flaws. Again, I just hope she can learn and move on from this.
I'll be interested to see what she has to say on The Today Show tomorrow.

I read that whole deposition, all 130+ pages ........
I don't see where she stated she wanted black men to dress as slaves to serve at a wedding -
She said she went to a restuarant, she was SO impressed with the servers - they weren't just 'waiters' they were professional, middle aged men who obviously made a real and true career, and probably a great living out of being a server ....... they were dressed so nicely and behaved to professionally it completely added to the whole experience of the restaurant - and she was AWARE of the fact that she couldn't and wouldn't replicate it b/c it wasn't worth the way other people MIGHT SEE it - she was obviou8sly aware it wasn't the best idea b/c others might find it to be inappropriate or offensive - so she didn't do it .........
have youi ever been to Morton's steakhouse? it's the EXACT same situation - with the one exception that all of the servers, all dressed the same way, are middle aged WHITE men -

I think the separate restrooms, porn, slave comments are hearsay by the employee who is suing her & her brother. It's hearsay right now, no?
When I went to NOLA last month all of the fancy historic restaurants had all waiters (of different races) wearing white dinner jackets and bow ties. I thought it was traditional southern historical attire, I never saw it as slave attire.
Mama Lombardi's in Holbrook there are no waitresses in the restaurant, only men off the boat from Italy
She admitted in her deposition that once when she was a bank teller a black man came in and held a gun to her head demanded money. She said that when the robber had fled she dropped the N word. (I'm sure that's not her only time) BUT that said, I'm sure she's not the only person on the entire planet that would react the same way after a life & death situation.
Again, not saying she's right. Just saying she's a human being. Not some idol that was worshipped.

I am not condoling the N-word at all. However, there is a HUGE double-standard. I worked at a high school in Queens and I heard the kids calling eachother that name all day long. It was offensive. I would have to yell at students not to say it, but they didn't care. They would say it in front of adults. Please, they would call adults that name. And, they weren't saying it just in a friendship context, it was in every context. It is a word that should have been removed from everyone's vocabulary years ago, but unfortunately it is huge because of rap music and such.

It wasn't always a "bad word" It was derived from the words negro or niger, which is latin for black. look up the definition of the word and you will see that even the dictionary states it as a "neutral term".
the word didn't DERIVE from oppression...it EVOLVED into a word used for oppression. Words can have power in either direction depending how you use them. The user gives that word it's power. We choose the meaning of the word by the context we use it in. If a black person decides that identifying with their latin name "negro", "nigga" or any variation of the word makes them feel powerful by redefining a word that has come to identify a time of hatred and turning it into a term of endearment or pride, especially after having that same term twisted to oppress their ancestors, why is that a bad thing? Why can't we let them own that and reclaim the word and attempt to put a more positive spin on a word that american culture has bastardized.
Why should black people stop using the word that LITERALLY describes the color of their skin? because somewhere along the line a white person decided to start using it as a derogatory term? I don't think that's fair to say at all.

Is she being persecuted for using the word? No. She's being fired. Just like any employer has the right to do to any employee using the N word or getting themselves embroiled in a public relations nightmare.
She's a public figure & her job at the Food Network depends on her reputation. She's being sued for discrimination. Based on the deposition, there is responsibility on her part over what goes on in her businesses. There is certainly a responsibility to recognize the impact discrimination has & the impact that word has when used by a white person.
Growing up, we used the term to signify a deli in the black area of a nearby town. I remember people asking someone to get something for them & the retort was "What color is my skin?" That was the 70s. Looking back, I'm disgusted with myself that it was acceptable. That's the expectation I'd have from someone who understands it's a bad way of thinking. I didn't see her apology as sincere at all.

I get what you're saying. I'm Hispanic so I know what "negro" means. However, all words come from a root word and than it can transpire into many different meanings whether good or bad. In this instance, it's bad. If people are saying the word and it hurts people, it shouldn't be said, period. Not in a friendly manner or a negative manner. But, such is life and people will still continue to use the word.

Yes, I have to say- his black friends were pissed about his comment. But his feelings were pretty much it is what it is and it's not going anywhere and as a black man, he's fine with it. But why should moguls and comedians make use of the word when those same people get offended by it? I see his point. I see other people's points. It is what it is. If I used that word at work, I would be fired so it doesn't matter who you are. However, sometimes people like to go after people with money to make money.

It's not surprising though, none of them want the bad press associated with her so they are all getting out before they get dragged though the mud too.
Honestly, I feel bad for her. I'm not saying her statements are right but it can't be easy losing everything and being ripped apart in the press. She's only human, I'm sure she's feeling pretty awful. Right or wrong, it's sad to watch someone fall like this.

I truly think the diabetes issue from last year was the first straw but this was now the straw that broke the camel's back. Many people felt lied to and upset that she was showing us howto make such fattening foods when in private she was dealing with adult onset diabetes and had to curb her own diet. She started going downhill then. SO what did she do? Become a drug company rep and her sons started cooking shows about "light meals". Now this and I think people are sick of her.I have to say I started seeing her in a different light and now I really don't know how I feel about her.
