Acid Reflux

Does anyone know of any med that can stop or reduce spit ups/vomiting? All the reflux meds I am aware of stop the pain/burning but not the spit up. My GI had recommended an antibiotic a while back, but I was hesitant giving this to my DD. However, I am growing desperate since she is actually losing weight because she doesnt eat well and due to the spitting up. She has been on omeprazole, but her spitting up was actually worse being on this than when she wasnt. The GI now wants her to be on axid, but I dont think this will be anymore effective in regards to the spitting up. I dont know what we should do? Probe, scope? Should we try the antibiotic? Any advice about what we should do or any med that could help with reducing spitting up. Thanks!!!

Re: Acid Reflux

My DD didnt have bad enough reflux to warrant Zantac. Basically she wasnt colicky. She would just scream when she spit up out of her nose. Used to be after every feeding but now it's rare. They have her on axid and malox 3x per day. I think this helps. She was never a big spitter though. If she did it was usually after feeding and was most or all her bottle. Not sure if it was a gas bubble that would bring it up. They had me try cereal to stop the nose spitting but it didnt work.

Re: Acid Reflux

I forget to ask.
How old?
Is it forcefully spitting up like projectile?

My dd spitting up out of her nose was considered forceful so they checked her for malrotation of the Gastro system. Basically where the digestive system doesn't develop right. People can have it and not know it. It's often found as newborns because it presents as reflux. My dd didnt have it. They did an upper gi series to check. It wasnt bad. I had to time her feeding so she didnt eat for 4 hrs. The. They had her drink barium chalky stuff under the X-ray machine. (Very low dose). I think she was 5/6 weeks when she had it done.

Acid Reflux

I think I have read on the boards some moms that have had success with Axid. Maybe think about giving it a try or maybe a second GI opinion.

DS is on Zantac so I cant be much help.

Re: Acid Reflux

prilosec compound!

My son was it on it for about 6 months. It significantly reduced the amount of spit up. I know technically that's not what they're supposed to do, but it did.

He would spit up whole bottles without it.

You also knew when it was time to up the meds (based on weight) because he's start spitting up more.

Re: Acid Reflux

there are MANY different kinds of reflux meds.

zantac and axid are in the same class. Bottom tier as far as meds go. They are just to help soothe the pain.

Prevacid, prilosec, nexium and others are inhibitors that help decrease the acid in the stomach and healing of the esophagus.

Just because one didn't work, doesn't mean another wont. You just have to find the right cocktail, like everything else. Chat Icon

My DD is 17 months adjusted. We thought she would have outgrown her reflux by now. She also has gag reflex. Her spitting up is occasionally projectile. She will start coughing and then spit up. She doesnt cry or scream and doesnt appear to be in any pain associated with acid. I'm not sure why our GI decided on axid. Our DD was on omeprazole for a few months and then was weaned off. Initially she seemed fine and was spitting up less frequently then when she had been on the med. She was off the med for 3 or 4 weeks and then her reflux has come back with a vengeance in the last 2 weeks. I will also mention that she had a cold virus so perhaps this has played a role in the reflux flareup. Still, she has lost quite a bit of weight and she hasnt been eating anything besides milk and carnation for the most part. This is getting scary and we are very worried. We need to get this reflux or whatever that is wreaking havoc on our DD's gastrointestinal system and stop all of this spitting up. I dont know if axid will prove to be any better than the omeprazole and why our GI would decide to put her on this med. What do you think? Thank you.

Do you have any idea why our GI would decide to go with axid after trying omeprazole. Is it because these two meds act differently and are in two different classes so maybe this type of med will be more effective for our DD's condition? Our DD had been on zantac while she was in the NICU and up until she was 8 or 9 months old before switching to omeprazole. Not sure if we should try the axid or perhaps going back to the omeprazole or trying another med in the same class such as nexium. Very confused and at our wit's end. This has been a losing battle for too long and our DD is wasting away.

I think we need to get a 2nd opinion as you suggested. I have lost alot of confidence in our current GI. He has prescribed reflux meds, antibiotics, and appetite stimulants for our DD and I'm very concerned that his answer to everything is a med/drug. Not sure if this is a good idea for our DD.

Thanks to everyone for offering their help. We are very worried that our DD is wasting away and are both very stressed and confused at this point and feel helpless. We are at a loss for answers and our pediatrician and GI havent been much help. I think we need to try new doctors and get 2nd opinions. I strongly urge others to please offer their advice and thoughts. Thank you.

I'd possibly get a 2nd opinion. I don't understand why your GI tried the lesser of the meds considering all you've said. Usually they might prescribe both.

So how long was she on the omeprazole? And she's never been scoped?
