Saw a mouse in the garage, what do we do now?

Coming home last night I was pulling into our garage and saw a little grey mouse darting around by some boxes. I freaked out, called DH who was upstairs and he was able to chase it out with a broom. I was kinda disappointed that he did kill it (I don't want that thing coming back in!) but I'm glad it's out of the house! Now I'm worried that there could be more . . .

We live in a very wooded area and have tons of wildlife around us- deer, foxes, rabbits, racoons and apparently mice Chat Icon . We moved in here about 2 years ago and noticed that the prior owner had a few rodent traps around the property. Now I know why!

Do you think this could have anything to do with us keeping our garbage in the garage? We've been doing this since the racoons kept destroying it every chance they got. Our garage is below our house and I do not want those disgusting things in my house! I'd love to get some tips from anyone who has dealt with this.

Could be due to the garbage BUT you are better off keeping your garbage inside your garage and risk mice than having raccoons hang out and tear oppen your garbage each night. Mice can get in the smallest openings, under garage doors, etc. I would just put up some mouse traps (NO poison) in your garage and see what happens. See if there are any small openings where the garage door meets the floor and try to block those.

I would much rather that than raccoons hanging around my home. They can carry rabies, they can poop on your patio, grass etc (and they carry raccoon roundworm which is deadly).

If the garage is cluttered at all I would clean it out. If there's any small openings stuff them with steel wool to keep mice out and set up a few traps. I would still keep my garbage in the garage...

Thanks for the responses, I will have to try this. I took a look at the garage doors and neither one appears to have any gaps (they're fairly new). I have no clue where it got in but I hope it was a fluke. I guess it could have ran it at some point when one of the doors was open, sometimes on nice days if we're outside we leave one open. I want to put some nontoxic traps down and see what happens. The glue traps would be a safe bet, right?

Be careful with these if you have pets or small children and never put them outside b/c birds can land on them.

You can also buy something like this as long as you have a few outlets in your garage:
Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller
Some get better reviews than others.
I would not want to deal with having to empty traps....

A mouse only needs a tiny tiny opening to get in. Think nickel size.

You live in a wooded area and it's getting cold. They are just looking for a warmer spot. Just put traps out but unless you plug every little gap and I'm sure there are tons you can't see the will get in. Every house has these tiny gaps so it's kinda normal.

My house is surrounded by woods as well. We had mice, have them every year especailly as it gets cold.

I called a rodent company and once a year, i believe could be 6 months, they come and put poison in the traps they set up. The mice eat the poison and then search for water but it kills them. But they leave so you don't have dead mice everywhere. It wasn't expensive.

I wonder if this is what the traps are we found around the property. They are black boxes with a little round hole. I've actually been wondering how to dispose of them because they scare me with DD playing outside. It sounds like a good idea but the poison with kids and pets makes me nervous.

I had a mouse in my classroom once, and I threw a plastic basket on top of it and the holes were about 1cm x 2cm and the mouse jumped right through the hole and started running around the classroom again. I was amazed at how little a space it could fit through! The mouse itself was about the size of a kiwi, and it just hopped through that little hole, no problem.

I guess what I am saying is that it could get in through the littlest space! I would wait and see if you see another one...it might just be a fluke.

Wow, that's crazy! I am really hoping it's a fluke and will probably wait and see if we find more. I just really don't want them in my house and if they're in the garage they could probably make their way in here.
