Holiday Tips

Ok ladies- I need some advice on Who, how much and when to tip people. I'm a new homeowner and I really have no idea on the etiquette.

We tip the sanitation guys. That's it. Our mailman stinks so he gets fat lot of nothing.

Re: Holiday Tips

I'm a relatively new homeowner but I can't afford any tips, to be honest. I just can't.

I've allotted my extra cash this month to go towards the Winter Wishes boy and the gifts i bought him.

In my mind, if an entire route of houses give their mail man and garbage men $ and gifts.....that sure must add up.

ITA 100%. Plus why would i tip a mail carrier, sanitation worker or my ups guy??? They make very good salaries. My friend is a UPS carrier and he makes more money then most people i know plus amazing benifits.

I tip people that depend on them to make a living like waitstaff and hairdressers not people making six figure salaries.

Re: Holiday Tips

I don't tip anyone and we've been in our home for almost 7yrs. Personally, and I know this probably isn't a popular opinion, but these people are all salaried workers. I don't see why I need to tip them to do their job? It's not like they do anything extra special for me, the garbage guys empty my cans and fling them like they do for every other neighbor, the mailman sticks the mail in my mailbox like he does for everyone else, and so on and so forth. I don't feel like I am getting any special service or extra attention therefore I don't really feel the need to tip them.

Aside from the fact that I have to draw the line somewhere at the holidays, between buying for my DD, family, friends, charities I simply can't afford everyone.

Exactly. I don't get a tip when I do my job. I only tip for services - i.e. waitress/taxi.

Re: Holiday Tips

I don't tip - no one tips me for doing my job. I'm sure the mailman, sanitation, etc will be retiring with a nice pension. Can't say the same for me lol.

Re: Holiday Tips

I have a business so I tip the mailman as he does extra for me. My UPS guy also comes daily to my house and goes above and beyond so he gets a very generous tip.

My garbage crew will get $100 as they took a lot of extra garbage from all my construction and business. I know what it's like to have lousy garbage crews and these guys from oyster bay do a great job and never give me grief about having things tied/bundled etc.

My cleaning crew will get one week's pay.

I tip sanitation workers, mailman, FedEx.

I put the $ in cards and I keep the cards by my door starting Dec 1 so I can run out when I see them.

Poor girl never got her questions really answered. When you're a new homeowner it's hard to really know. As you can see by the responses on here it really varies as to what you are comfortable with, feel is appropriate, who deserves it and what you can afford. To answer your questions of who, how much and when, this is what we do. Again, this is just what WE do and by no means am meaning to start drama. I should add that 95% of my business is from home so I generate a lot of mail. We also tend to have a lot of garbage as we entertain a lot.

Mailman - $20 - will give to him next week when I see him

Garbage - $50 - DH will give to them as next week as they come pretty consistently the same time he is getting ready to go to work

Newspaper delivery - $25 - check mailed to them this week

We have done $10 for each garbage man, $15 to the mail lady and $20 to FedEx and UPS delivery men. DH gets a lot of packages for work so we see them everyday, sometimes twice a day.

My husband is in sanitation and does not make six figures! They work in every kind of weather taking your garbage they always get tipped and guess what the houses that tip them they take care of! So maybe you should reconsider!

This is what we do as well.

I tipped my mailman on Tuesday since I was working form home and I tip the garbage men when I see them.

I give the cleaning lady one visit's pay.

I was talking about my friend the UPS carrier making six figures. I have no idea how much sanitation makes but I know its a good salary and they do not work for tips like waitstaff.
You comment about your husband "taking care" of the houses that tip him is exactly why I dont tip.
I go above and beyond for people all the time at work and I NEVER do it because someone tips me.
