Re: Oyster bay east Norwich SD

I live in Oyster Bay. The town is small, pretty quiet. Billy Joel is often around and about Chat Icon Beach is nearby, restaurants are good. Farmers market in town on fridays, classic car night in town on Tuesdays.

The school district is great. One guidance counselor from queens, told me the HS is considered one of the top 4 Ivy league "feeders" on Long Island. The elementary school has the Columbia University reading project and Columbia considers it their top schools in NY. There is only one elementary, one middle school, which I like because every kid my kids meet, I know they will be in the same school with them, when the time comes.

FM me, if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for the info. And for responding so quickly. The elementary school sounds great! Are there any areas to stay away from or is it all nice?

There are no "bad" parts. I would say East Norwich, is all kind of an even keel. In Oyster Bay, their are areas with less $, within walking distance of areas with ridiculous wealth.

I don't live in Oyster Bay / East Norwich but the area is indeed great! My Uncle Sal lives in East Norwich and he loves it. DH and I spend time in Oyster Bay checking out restaurants, going to the car show, and to Bonanzas! Great town with lots to do. Seems very family oriented. I would love to move there but the town really is out of the way for us. Good luck on finding something there! Taxes are low which is a PLUS!

My aunt is in LV and my cousin works in Oyster Bay. The school district is fabulous. Only thing I don't love about that area is distance to the highway and the LIRR line sucks. Other than that, I would've moved there!

Thanks for the responses. Why does the lirr line suck ? That was part of the reason for moving that way . Currently we're in Huntington, and my husband hates the hour plus commute to the city.I teach in kings park and my mom watches are two children (shes in huntington too) so we can't go too far west. Thought east Norwich would be a great compromise. What lirr line is it? How far is it to a major highway?

The Oyster Bay line, does not run very frequently. You must transfer at least 1x, if not 2x to get to NYC. Most people use the Syosset or Hicksville Line. The Syosset train station is about 6 minutes away, its not a big deal.
From E. Norwich, the highways are about 8-10 minutes away, about 5 miles.

If you need a good commute, Oyster Bay isn't the town for you. That train line is awful (e.g., slow trains that infrequently run and require a change at Jamaica or Mineola).

You are better off considering Mineola, Garden City, Manhasset, Syosset, or Port Washington.

Yep, I am in East Norwich. I echo everything Laura said. Love our town. We are looking to upgrade to a bigger house, and we want to stay in the area or one or two towns over.

I guess it wouldn't be fair if I didn't mention that I send my kids to Catholic school. I would do that no matter what town I lived in, it's more of a religious belief and has nothing to do with the districts.

And as far as the trains, everyone travels the 5 miles south to Syosset. I took the train to NYC for many years and always went from Syosset. Parking stickers are $20 for 2 years! Can't beat it.

In EN, the smaller cape homes are on the west side of Route 106. to the east of Rt. 106, the homes are a little bigger with a little more property.

Any specific questions, just FM. I've lived here nearly 11 years. And the town is only 1 sq. mile, so I know all the streets and could give advice on any home you may be interested in!

Re: Oyster bay east Norwich SD

I live in Oyster Bay and can't say enough great things about this town. Having grown up in Queens, I love the town and how there are so many places in walking distance from where we live. Personally, I can't say much about the school district, as my DD is not even 2 yet. I can say that the library is amazing! They offer many free programs and a beautiful children's section. Teddy Roosevelt park is a beautiful waterfront park with two playgrounds and a beach.

As far as the area is concerned, it's a mixed bag as previous posters mentioned. There are a lot of beautiful homes surrounded by average homes...all within walking distance of ridiculous wealth. There are also a lot of rentals and bigger apartment type housing. I wouldn't say there are any bad areas in Oyster Bay; although, feel free to FM me about specific blocks.

Re: Oyster bay east Norwich SD

I grew up in Locust Valley and my family still lives there. I completely agree about the train line. Although they have nicer trains now (until about 10 years ago the train cars that were in use were made in the 1920s.) You would need to drive to either Syosset or Hicksville for the express trains. I used to drive to Hicksville as the commute from Penn Station to Locust Valley is 1 hour and 30 minutes and I would have to transfer at Jamaica. It is a beautiful area, but there are specific blocks you might want to avoid due to drugs... FM with questions.

I think the other ladies answered the LIRR question, but moving even to Syosset is only going to shorten his commute by 10 minutes. I used to commute from Huntington and it was Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset and it is only about 10 minutes between the 2 stops.

If you're looking to cut it dramatically, I would do what the rest of the ladies suggested, look further west. I know its difficult though because your mother is in Huntington and she watches the kids...but if you stay on the North Shore, you could easily do the drops and pick ups on the way to Kings Park. What about Albertson/NHP area?

Re: Oyster bay east Norwich SD

Thanks everyone for the information. We drove around east Norwich yesterday and thought it was cute. Oyster bay is Nice too but would definitely add to our commute being that it's so north. We are set on having a colonial with 4 bedrooms and at least 2 baths. We would also like a decent amount of property. We didnt see too many houses that fit our style. I'm not really interested in going too much west. I've commuted from the mineola area (before kids) and it wasn't great. Even cutting my husbands commute by 15 -20 minutes would be good. Oh well on to more searching. Thanks for all your help!

I live in East Norwich and DD will go to the schools in this district. Since DD is only 15 months I don't have much experience with the school district, but have only heard great things from neighbors.

Most people take the train from Syosset, thats what I do. Its only a 10 min drive to the station and the trains come much more frequently and its a shorter ride! I love the area as well and have a 4 bedroom 2 bath colonial as well! :)
