Peanut butter - yes or no?

I remember recently reading thateating peanut butter while pregnant can lead to a nut allergy later. I keep forgetting to ask my doctor about this. Are you all still eating peanut butter or have you stopped? It's so much easier to make a PBJ sandwich for lunch than other things!

I eat peanut butter all the time. Some people have told me that eating it during pregnancy reduces risk of allergies. I think no one really knows.

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

I think there are studies that go both ways as far as eating PB while pregnant and while nursing. If you don't have any family history of peanut allergies, then I wouldn't worry about eating it. I ate PB almost every day during pregnancy.

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

I would eat it, I couldn't eat peanut butter when I was PG - it made me gag. DS now has a severe peanut allergy.

I also rarely ate nuts and he is also severely allergic to treenuts. Some allergists say exposure is best to prevent and allergy, others say no exposure. I lean towards exposure is best, but we have also had 2 or 3 cats since DS was born and he is allergic to cats too.

Agreed! I ate it alot with DS also! I love PBJ!!! DS loves it too so we eat it at least 2x a week here!

I read an article that said one reason that allergies are on the rise is because when we are pregnant we deprive ourselves of so much that we arent exposing our babies too and they develop sensitivities to more items when they are finally exposed.

I eat it all the time....chocolate peanut butter ice cream is a staple for me lately. I was just reading something in Fit Pregnancy at the doctor's office about how the whole 'don't eat peanut butter' thing is a myth.

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

I say go for it! DH read a lot of the medical articles about pregnancy and peanut butter because I had a huge peanut butter phase during my second trimester (and I am someone that NEVER eats peanut butter!). The articles DH read lacked a significant number of participants and they did not take other factors into account in their studies to really determine if it really causes an allergy. The important thing, though, is that all the articles stated that pregnancy and peanut butter is not linked to the deadly pb allergy that some people with pb allergies have. If you feel worried, ask your doctor!

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

honestly...I believe that as pregnant women avoiding too many things is what causes our children to end up with more allergies and adverse reactions to it when they contact those things later in life.

It's like how many moms freak out and everything has to be antibacterialized and no perfume and "don't touch the baby" etc. and then we wonder why baby breaks out into hives at the first sight of a speck of dust or something. I plan on exposing my baby to things as long as its not seriously detrimental to their health which i don't consider eating PB to be.

sorry to go on a tangent but i was having this conversation with a greek man upon discussing the "no feta" during pregnancy thing and I said "well what the heck do meditteranean women do? I'm sure they eat it at every sitting and have plenty of healthy babies...maybe moreso than u.s, no?" an we started discussing this and he shared my views and said "god what happened to the days when kids could play in the mud? now they want to protect them from everything but it only makes things worse!"

ETA: wild grape pop tarts with peanut butter spread on them and sliced banana and a tall glass of milk is HEAVEN

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

I eat PB every work day for my sandwich because I can't have cold cuts...I would think it's the opposite, exposure prevents allergies. DH is severely allergic to cat, so I fear the baby will have a predisposition to allergies, so I'm going to make sure he's exposed to everything from a very early age to help prevent them.

I agree with you! But I still won't have feta unless it's cooked. I don't know what restaurants are serving. Chat Icon But our moms probably didn't avoid so much and I think we came out ok.

Love peanut butter. I eat it at least once a day and did the same with my first pg. DS is 2 and has no signs of peanut allergy.

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

PB & J sandwiches have been my go to lately for lunches and snacks. I see no harm in it. But now that you mention it, I will probably double check with my Dr. next week.

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

I have severe nut allergies although not peanuts ( [peanuts are not a nut) I have read and heard that eating nuts is beneficial to the baby.. super amounts of protein... I am not even sure where my nut allergy came from .. some say it was from my early milk allergy as a baby .. so keep on eating nuts..

I couldn't exist without pb&j for either of my pregnancies. For the record, DS has no peanut allergy and I also ate it throughout the 15 months I nursed him.

Re: Peanut butter - yes or no?

My DS has a peanut allergy. I asked his allergist if I should steer clear of peanut butter in my next pregnancy and he said there have been no conclusive studies proving any connection between eating peanut butter during pregnancy and allergies after birth.

With that information, I have eaten peanut butter during this pregnancy.

Dh and I had bad allergies so we read up a lot when I was PG with DS. He is now 4. DH is now an allergist Chat Icon

There is no consensus on exposure. So, everything in moderation...

The one thing that is linked to a decreased incidence of allergies is BFing. So DS was BF to 21 months. I think it's because BFing is not sterile, DH thinks it's an antibody thing. Either way, with our crazy histories, the pedi is shocked that the only thing DS might be allergic to is maybe penicillin. And that's debatable...we will find out when he gets older so he can get skin tested. Not everyone can or wants to bF so it's totally a personal decision whether to Bf or not. We also let DS play in dirt and aren't crazy about sterilizing except bathroom and kitchen.
