Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

Do you mean for naps or in general?

For nighttime he's a great sleeper and goes to sleep on his own. Lights off, sound machine and projector on then kisses and hugs and he goes in his crib, grabs a paci and gets comfy to sleep.

Naps is different. Weekdays he naps at daycare either in his crib or their swing. If I bring in a paci it's the crib (really trying to cut that out so he's getting harder to nap)

Weekends we're out and about so it's usually in the car, walking in the stroller, on me or CIO in his crib.

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

sounds like she needs motion to fall asleep. Perhaps sitting with her and reading to her till she gets tired? or using a rocking chair. good luck

I still rock him to sleep both for naps and bedtime. If I get the timing right, it only takes a minute or so.

in general,
she just needs to be rocked.
or at night if shes really tired she'll fall asleep with me in bed, but she does the butt in the air, head in the pillows thing... falls asleep and i move her to her crib

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

Well, she's 10 months but we do bath, book and then I nurse her. I put her in the crib tired, but awake. She will roll around a little and play and fall asleep. Sometimes it's for 15 minutes, sometimes not at all. She wasn't always like this though, we had to do a little CIO to get her to fall asleep in her crib on her own.

We have a routine...bath (every other night), get into jammies, 3 o 4 story books, in the crib she goes, her CD goes on and we walk out...

She cries for like 20 seconds and then she's laying down going to sleep....

unlike today where everything above happened, but she's laying there, babbling quietly to her stuffed doggy...

Ann usually falls asleep in my bed after a bottle, watching Wonder Pets (at least this is how the summer has been going since we are camped out in my room - the only one with AC).

Tonight, I gave her a bottle in her crib in her room and she probably would have fallen asleep on her own but I took her out and held her and let her fall asleep on me and then put her back down. Not sure who needed the comfy snuggle - her or me Chat Icon

I used to rock my older son to sleep. When we took the nighttime bottle away I started reading to him and then would talk about his day and tell him "now it's time to go to bed". We did CIO for 3 nights and that was it but I respect that you don't want to do it. Over time we built up a nice routine and even now, at 3 years old, he goes down the same way without too much of a problem.

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

For me CIO didn't really last long - and it was more whine it out than cry it out. She was literally standing in her crib staring at the door to see if we'd come in. Maybe the first night was 30 mins, then 10 then she would just play until she fell asleep. I read with her throughout the day and repeatedly read her favorite books so that at night she just is ready for it. I also wait until she's really tired at night to put her to bed so that I cut down on any whining before she goes to sleep.

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

I have been doing the same thing as you - we go for a long walk and he falls asleep that way. The nights we dont do walks I lay in bed with him - he nurses for awhile then rolls over and goes to sleep and I move him to his crib.

I cannot do CIO either so this is the only option for me - I wish I could put him in his crib and walk out but I tried it once and he started to cry and that was it for me.

Oh, it NEVER would have worked for us if she were in our room. The only way it works is that she has her own room!

Lots of luck to you!

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

for naps and bedtime at night we do the same thing when were home.

put her in the crib with her projector on and aquarium along with the blankie and the binki. she will sometimes make noise for about a minute just to test if there are other people over, but it's usually less than a minute and i wouldnt even consider it CIO since she calms herself down quickly and doesn't get hysterical. if she does get a little hysterical i go in there pick her up, calm her down and then put her back down and leave the room.

DD's crib is in our room and we were able to CIO it out successfully. It only took about 3 nights.

I def feel your pain- and have pretended I'm sleeping on more than one occasion too- LOL

I rock Tommy to sleep in the glider but lately he thinks it's playtime so we've been doing CIO and it has been working (usually lol)

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

Glad you posted about this b/c this has been a debate I have been having (with myself, lol)..tried CIO/ferber about 3 months ago and she vomited, and I was done, she is about 11 months now, daycare she lays down, they rock the crib a little and she is out cold they say, naps here usually after a bottle or on us, nightime we usually rock her or asleep to bottle....sometimes I am able to put her down drowsy and she whines a min. or so and falls asleep. She had a stomach virus for a a week recently and I have made every excuse as to why I cant do Ferber....thing is the rocking takes 15 minutes the most ....what I have done that is working is rocking less ..do bath, bottle, sometimes book or tv, rock 10 mins and in crib...cutting the rocking...for us key is doing the bottle and books/tv when she is very sleepy so by the time she is done w/ the bottle she is either asleep or just about ready too....IDK I feel like whining is ok but crying for a while is so hard, the Dr. said it is healthy to cry for a few hours...I say nope!!!! It is hard, I think consistency and routine are the most important for them....good luck, it is hard.....

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

I never did CIO or ferber, it was getting out of hand for alittle but b/c DS would only go to sleep if i rocked him or put him to sleep. So i just started experimenting, and so far its worked for about a month for naps and bedside. When its time to sleep i pick him up and talk to him in a stern but soft voice lol, i say its time to sleep, here is your baby, and i put the blanket on him and walk out of the room, and then he goes out like a light.

thanks hopefully it sticks, he did cry in the beginning but we didnt let him cry for more than a few minutes then we would go back in give him his paci and d it again. Until he eventually one day just did it on his own.

Re: how does/did your 1 yr old fall asleep?

My kids both went down in very different ways at that age. I never used CIO either. DD needed to be cuddled or have someone lay down with her or nursed to sleep until she was 2+ Chat Icon

DS I think is my reward for what I had to go through with DD sleepwise Chat Icon He was the worst sleeper until around 9 months or so. I finally started putting him in the crib & letting him fuss while I played his music box & rubbed his back. It took a few days of that & then I was able to just put him in the crib with his blankie & his music & he goes right to sleep. He's 16 months now & still does this. In fact when he gets tired he'll cry & then quiet down as soon as he sees the crib.

ETA: Like I said, I was never for CIO either. I did learn with DS that there inevitable will be a little fussing while training them to go to sleep as easily as DS does now. I did have to learn to let him fuss & whine. I can tell the difference between his cranky, fussy cry & between the "I need you" crying. His whining I learned to ignore. It usually lasted 2 or 3 minutes tops before he was out. The crying I always went back & comforted him or picked him.
