At my wit's end with giving medicine...
As some of you know, Jordan is on meds for reflux - as of Tuesday, THREE of them now. He gets medicine between 6-8 times a day (one med is flexible.) It is ALWAYS a struggle and it's so many times a day. 90% of the time, he spits some out (or more) and I never know how much he's actually getting in him and not on his neck! The only medicine that can be given right before the bottle or even in it, is the Zantac - he's doing "ok" with that one because I shove a bottle in his mouth right after I give it. But the Prevacid, which is really important comes half hour before meal - 3 quarters of the time, he spits at least some, if not most, out. Same goes for his "coater" medicine which comes at least half hour after meals.
I've tried reclined then upright, blowing on his face, squeezing his cheeks, paci. I just don't know what to do anymore. This morning, we had major vomit when I gave him his Prevacid (he'd eaten 3 hours before) and half the "coater" med was spit back up. I just don't think he's getting any medicine.
For every "successful" medication time we have, we have three bad ones.
Any tried and true tricks?

He always used to spit out his tylenol - now we cover his eyes and its like he doesn't even know what just happened

I had the SAME problem with my DS, and after alot of thinking we came up with this...
We had quite a few of the soothie paci ( hosptial one) so we cut the tip off of one of them. We would get the medicine ready in the the dropper, put the paci in his mouth and real quick put the dropper in the hole and squeezed. Because his tounge was under the paci the medicine went straight down his throat and he couldn't push it out.
This worked EVERY time!!!!

Do you use a syringe or a nipple? I used a nipple when I had to give liquid meds to Abby as a newborn. If it is thick, you could always make the holes bigger.

This is what we did....
DS used the playtex nursers so we would put the meds in a fast flow nipple and then have him suck the meds through the nipple...
I think we would mix it with a little water too but I dont remember...
It worked very well..

The key it to make sure the dropper with the medicine goes NOT on his tongue, but all the way on the back, on the side of his cheek. That way he will not be able to spit it out even if he tries.

How old is DS?
DS is 21 months now.....since he could sip from a straw....we mix his stuff with a tiny bit of juice in a glass & let him sip it through the straw.
Logan gets allergy meds one time a day...not nearly as often but the fight each night to get it in him was horrific ...when we switched to the juice & straw method it was like a fun treat for him!!

Did you try what my BFF showed you with putting his head back? She got the meds in him when she did that. It works for Sienna as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. DS is only 9 weeks old so def no straw. I will def try the soothie and the nipple too! Mich - that's the way I give meds now - how your friend showed me, but still comes out a lot!

I have to give Xavier Axid 2x a day. I lay him flat an squirt a little in at a time into the side of his mouth. Sometimes he spits it out though.

We used the 1ML syringe and would always go to the back of her cheek (for some reason she took to the left side better). The larger syringes didn't work. Also, if I would sing to her or make her laugh while giving it- for some reason she would do better.

Yup...this is what I would suggest. DS1 was on medication for acid reflux and we would give him his medicine this way. Small amounts in the back of the cheek. They are forced to swallow based on the location and saliva flowing that way. DS very rarely was able to force it away.

Chances are, even though you feel like something still comes out, it's only a little bit. Most of it ends up in his tummy just because it is practically impossible to spit out liquid that ends up in that part of one's mouth. Just make sure to push the dropper slowly, in small amounts.

I know the Prevacid should be given before a meal (my DD is on Prilosec -- same thing) but I just couldn't get it into her after a while. The available drug is decreased by about 10-30% by giving it after a meal (and probably somewhere in the middle if you give it at the beginning of a meal). Are you giving the solution that is prepared by the pharmacy? If so, it tastes GOD AWFUL!!! Maybe you could mix it with 1/2 an ounce or an ounce of his formula and maybe he would take it that way? Giving it with a bit of liquid won't change the available amount of the drug by that much. My DD finally started refusing the med even mixed with the formula. We ended up having to get capsules and sprinkling the pellets onto some babyfood to get her to take it. I know your DS is too young to do it that way, but I just want to let you know that you don't have to follow the "empty stomach" rule to the letter -- getting it into him some way is better than not getting it into him at all.
And just wondering...why is he on both Zantac twice a day and Prevacid? And what "coater" is he taking?
ETA: when I had to give liquid meds to my DD, I would squirt a bit in and then follow quickly with the binky...it took a few squirts to get the whole dose in but it worked.

Have you tried squirting it in the side of his mouth while the binky is still in? Or squirting it in his mouth and plugging him up with the binky? Worked every time for Ava because she'd just go on with sucking on the binky and swallow the meds without realizing.
