I am an exempt employee / management level...my boss's expectation is for me to be on vacation but "available" for phone calls if need be.....same as she is. I'm ok with it as long as it doesn't get out of control.

I don't work the whole time but, I participate in conference calls and am expected to answer emails.

I'm a project manager, so I usually try to plan vacations when we don't have major milestones due. If I do get busy when I'm going to be on vacation, I make myself available. I may check email and/or participate on a conf call if needed.

i am expected to work no matter what - and if i go days without checking my email i have like anxiety because i know that my inbox will be jammed

I am in management and am the only person in my department. Unfortunately, I really can't do my work if I'm away, but except for my honeymoon when I was in french polynesia w/o a functioning cell phone, I am always available by cell for any emergencies or issues.
Someone will take care of a couple of things for me while I'm out - things that need to be addressed - but for the most part, I just have a sh*tload of work to do when I get back.
In fact, I'm going away and won't be reachable by cell and won't have email access for over a week - I can only imagine what my email inbox and desk will be like when I get back

I am not expected to work while on vacation, but if I am around, I will check in via email.
however, when DH and I went Europe in December, I did not check in - even though I could have easily done so from the computers in our hotels.

Yes. They will call me no matter where I am for any reason. I am a non-exempt employee however.
