Hello to All! and a question????

Hello Ladies,
This is my first post so I just want to say hello, congrats to everyone and thank you for all of the advice I have received while "lurking" for the past few weeks!

My name is Kim and we got our BFP on 4/27!! This is our first baby and we are so excited........but trying not to get too excited yet.....

I have a few questions, and hopefully someone can clear a few things up for me....sorry if this gets long, but I just got off the phone with the dr's office and I fuming!!!

I had my first ob-gyn appointment last Friday. They told me to come in when I called because my LMP was March 4 and they were thinking I was probably 8 weeks already. I knew that I wouldn't be because my cycles are usually around 45-50 days, so I was thinking more like 5 weeks.....
The Dr didn't really listen to that and when the sono showed a gestational sac that looked like I was only 5 weeks along and heard that I have been having light spotting (and I mean very light) he told us I was probably going to miscarry. He quickly explained what to expect, how to handle it, and the appointment was over in what seemed like 5 minutes.....but then they sat me down with the OB coordinator to plan my next "big" visit, prenatal vitamins and she was all "CONGRATULATIONS, so the doctor think things look god, yada-yada!!!!!!) So confused.

I was told to come back in on Monday morning to check my Hcg levels and if they increased by 60% I might be ok....

We waited until this morning when they finally called and she said, now I am not the doctor but I don't think they increased enough, they doubled from 3000-6000 but I don't think they went up enough, but then again she said she didnt know and the doctor would be calling me to let me know....ugh!

Isn't HCG levels doubling in 48-72 hours normal?

I guess this is more of a rant than a question, but I am just wondering what you ladies think and what you would do....

Thanks!!!!

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

first of all, welcome and congrats!

second of all RUN AWAY from that OB! OMG i am so mad for you - who does that???

you are mostly likely fine - if you have long cycles you probably O'd late, which means you implanted late, which means you won't see anything on a sono yet.

light spotting in early pregnancy it totally common and normal.

and YES your numbers sound great - they should be doubling about every 48 hours.

i am sorry you had a bad first experience but we are all ehre to help when we can - no question is too silly!

lots of luck and i hope you have a healthy and happy 9 months!!!

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

Congrats and welcome!

I went for my first sono at 5 weeks and there was only a sac...and I had some light spotting early on.

I think I would look for another dr...something doesn't sound right there

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

thank you for the encouraging words, it's better to hear from girls who are actually going through this, my friends are great (the few that I have told) but I am the first to have a baby so they don't really understand what I mean about levels, sono's etc....

my husband is sooo mad....and it is really cute actually because he is very easy going but this has him so fired up, he had to leave this morning for a business trip and was so upset we didn't have the results before he had to leave me here alone

I am definitely considering switching doctors, but I am so disappointed because I am a teacher and 3 other teachers at my school are pregnant right now and they all go to this practice and love it!!! maybe it is just the doctor I got, so I will see what he says at my next visit about all of this

is it awkward to switch doctors at the same practice? has anyone done that?

and don't worry ladies...i moved to FL from Long Island two years ago, so none of you will have to put up with the same office Chat Icon

When you are pregnant you usually have to see all of the dr.s and you never know who will be on-call when you deliver. I would completely switch practices. The same thing happened to a friend of mine here. A good dr. should know that not every woman has 28 day cycles Chat Icon

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

When I went at 5 weeks they also only saw a sac. Totally normal! I agree with all the PP and suggest you find a new practice. The doctor sounds bad, and so does the OB coordinator. I mean did she even look at your file??

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

yea the thing with the OB coordinator not having a clue about me was really weird, I was walked right into her office as soon as the sono was finished, I don't even think she new anything about me except my name......kinda weird.....
it is a brand new, huge practice, with tons of specialists, and so many women i work with go there....i will definitely be voicing my concerns and seriously considering switching!!! .....if only i knew anyone in florida that didn't go there, that could recommend somewhere else Chat Icon

Congrats!

you should go to the doc that your coworkers go to.

Spotting does happen to a lot of ppl, I spotted from week 5-9. your numbers sound good, I think they should double every 48 hours

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

Oh sweetie, CONGRATULATIONS, and I'm with all the others, RUN AWAY from this OB; he sounds like a real jerk, and GOD FORBID, what if there turns out to be something that requires special attention for Chat Icon during your pregnancy, is he just going to write it off in such a blase manner?

Right now time is on your side, the HCG levels should be doubling so you sound fine. A little spotting is not usually worrisome at all either.

And as Julz mentioned, I go to an OB practice in NYC, and they tell you up front that any of the 3 ob/gyns could be your doc at the time of delivery, so they make sure that you see ALL of them during prenatal visit scheduling.

Best of luck to you!!!!

Re: Hello to All! and a question????

congrats and welcome!

i got my bfp on 4/30. my LMP was March 19th. I am going through a similar experience.

i went to the dr. this past friday to get a blood test to confirm pregnancy ( after taking two pregnancy tests)and they took blood and did an ultrasound ( im so new at this i dont the difference between an ultrasound and a sonogram- all i know is they stuck a camera up my whoo-ha)
anyhow, he said the sac was rather small, saw some bleeding etc. and he seemed rather concerned.
and of course the whole weekend, i am spotting like crazy.setting myself up for a miscarriage.
i was a nervous wreck.
i got my blood results on Monday and he said my levels look great. i am still trying not to get tooo excited just in case.- esp. after all the spotting over the weekend.
my next appt. is this friday and we should see a heartbeat.

all i know is i am def. going to switch drs. b/c when i was on the phone with him, he was talking a mile a minuteChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon i was outside on my cellphone and utterly confused. not only that, this is my first pregnancy, i wish he would have walked me through a few things.
i am going to go to my next appt. and look for a new dr. asap.

in your case, i think we have a similar issue. we both caught the pregnancy early, therefore the sac is small. and in the early phase of pregnancy there is something called implantation?- just learned about this term!
it causes some spotting and bleeding - something to do with the sac attaching itself to the uterus?
as you can see i need to get myself a book!
so, try to stay calm and htink positive!

congrats!!
