I am freaking out right now and I am not even sure if I need to be. I thought you ladies maybe could help me. I went for my first beta on Tuesday at rsofny. They called to tell me that my hcg levels were 685. When I looked this up, it fell within the normal range.

I went back today and the nurse said I had to come back right away for a sono. I asked her why when they originally told me in another 10 days i would have my first. She said that my beta number was very high for where I should be at and that may be a sign of either a tubal pregnancy or something else. So of course I almost pass out right there. The nurse was soo sweet but now I am a nervous wreck. Is 685 really all that high to be about 5 weeks pregnant? I didnt think so.

Originally I thought we got pregnant when I had reached the peak on my monitor which was on December 10th but now I am wondering if maybe we got pregnant on the first shot with only high on the monitor back on December 3rd which would make me further along.

At first i was so excited about this 685 number and now I am so worried something is wrong...anyone have any feedback???

They are just being precautionary. They are basing your conception date on when they feel you ovulated. They want to make sure it isn't etopic because that could cause you a lot of harm including death. Maybe your beta is so high because there are two in there...Chat Icon

Don't worry - you just get to see your little one sooner.

Keep us updated because I worry.

Your #s sound fine to me! Here is what I found re: HCG from the American Pregnancy Association:

Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy:

3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml

I have no idea what they were talking about. When do you go in? If you have to wait I would call them back and ask what they are basing this on. Try not worry!!!

I would call them back now and insist on speaking with your MD, why should you worry all night!

Re: Please read, you may be able to help

Apparently these orders and "words" did come from my doctor. It was all written in my chart by her. I am waiting for the results of the blood test from today now.

Also..who performs the sonogram at rsofny..a nurse or the doctor herself?

usually it is a just a sono tech that does it. I would still call and insist on speaking with the MD. The info they gave you is wrong!

Re: Please read, you may be able to help

I can't even believe they instilled this type of fear.

That beta number is completely fine for a uterine pregnancy at 5 weeks.

You didn't conceive during the high reading, you conceived when you ovulated which was the peak. At 14 dpo, I had a beta of 170, 16 dpo 348 and then the next was 900. All before my 5th week....completely normal !

I wish they would just allow people to enjoy their pregnancies and not put so much concern onto them !

A woman I speak with on FF, had a beta of I believe 48, then she had another done, and it was in the 60's. She didn't have a great doubling rate, but her third beta, went to 400. What I am trying to say, is that these numbers are used for statistical purposes, to be studied. Not every pregnancy follows the same doubling rate. She has a very healthy pregnancy.

I hope you went to the office today and now your mind is at ease. Remember to 'DEMAND' the progesterone suppositories...

I am so sorry I forgot to update on this board.

Well I went for the sono and no one mentioned anything about ectopic pregnancy or my numbers being too high.

The sono tech said everything looked good, I am 5 weeks and 3 days. She said everything is in the right place (thank god) but no heartbeat just yet. But my progesterone levels are low and I have to take suppositories.

But for now, everything looks good and I dont know why they worried me about the numbers because now they said the numbers are doubling nicely. So why they worried me in the first place, I have no idea. Thanks for asking ladies. Chat Icon

Re: Please read, you may be able to help

That's great!!!!! Maybe they were worried cuz your progesterone numbers were low. My friend had an ectopic a few months ago and her progesterone was low(they didn't catch it though and she had to have a tube removed)
