Vent on daycare

I am due in February and i am already trying to find daycare because based on family/friends' experiences, it can be tedious. I am trying to find daycare in Brooklyn because I work in a courthouse in Brooklyn. The other day I was walking the hallway and say a Family Daycare in the courthouse. It was beautiful, clean and brand new. I asked about it and was told that the daycare is only for "defendants" or for parents with cases in family court(I work in a criminal court). I was so ******...so people who commit crimes can get free daycare, but I, a lawabiding tax payer has to run around and try to find day care. I am not complaining that I have to pay for daycare, but I work in a huge courthouse with lots of working mothers. How do you not have daycare for these mothers, but then have a free daycare for defendants?!?!?! Sorry, I must vent!Chat Icon

Ok, but isn't that just for a day at a time? So basically it is babysitting while the person is in court?

That totally isn't the same as daily day care. Believe me, I think businesses should provide or help with daycare, but I wouldn't get mad at this circumstance.

ETA: Plus, a lot people in family court are not there for crimes they have committed.

Re: Vent on daycare

The daycare game is very annoying. I am due in January and already put a depost on a center for Sept of '08 to hold the spot. It is a fortune!!

Re: Vent on daycare

I know - I need Daycare starting in Feb and the last place I visited only has one spot left so I have to make up my mind ASAP.

I also called a couple agencies for nannies and they want like $660 a week Chat Icon

It is mostly for defendants in criminal cases, and while true that most of the times the daycare is for people sitting in court, we had a defendant (female) who stabbed another woman, cut three of her fingers off and was on trial in our part for 3 weeks. She used daycare for that whole three week period while 10 members of her family sat in the courtroom. She was convicted in 45 minutes because the incident caught on videotape. My taxes are paying to use that daycare for her! I spoke to the director of the daycare and asked why employees can't pay to use the facility and she laughed and said "get arrested and you can use it".

That totally stinks!! I spend @ 3 days per month in Family Court in another county and will be able to use the courthouse day care facility once the baby is walking. Chat Icon By that point I'll be fine putting him/her in daycare, it is immediately after birth during the small infant stage that I don't want to be separated.

Re: Vent on daycare

Well, I guess the alternative would be for the criminals to bring their children in the court room and distract everyone. Same for family court folks (who btw are NOT criminals). Or have the criminals not show up since they have no childcare then get arrested on a warrant for no appearance and then the tax payers are stuck with the burden of housing the criminal in jail.

While it stinks that you work in the building and they have no care you can utilize, it makes sense to me why they offer it.
