Can you BTDT moms help out a poor expecting mother please?
I am finding the world of breast pumps extremely confusing and was hoping for some guidence. I am torn between the Ameda Purely Yours and the Medela Pump in Style. I will not be returning to work, but do need a pump so that DH can feed the baby and so that I can eventually leave the house. Any feedback on these two pumps would be greatly appreciated!!TIA!!!

I have the new pump in style advanced and I really love it. Its very small so I can travel with it.

I have used both of these and they are both great. They are the strongest of the non-rental pumps.
I like the Ameda because it is a closed system like a rental pump.
The Ameda is cheaper if you are looking for a cheaper version.
Most working moms have the Pump in Style. I had the advanced. You can't go wrong with either of them!

For my occasional purposes ( I am a SAHM who only pumps on occasion) I have a single Medela electric pump.

I had Medela PIS and it is GREAT! However, I went back to work when my son was 3 months old and used it for heavy duty pumping for a year. I am not sure if that is something you need, considering you will only use it occasionally and also considering how expensive MPIS is.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about your other choice, but perhaps it is more suitable for an occasional pumper.

I use the Medela in Style Advanced and I swear by it. It gets the job done quickly and effectively. I don't know anything about the Ameda though.

You may also want to check if this is something your insurance would cover with a prescription -- I'm sure your doctor at the hospital will have a valid reason like "difficulty latching" or "sore nipples" which just about 95% of new moms have!

I have to use a rental pump because the others were not strong enough for me. I have to pump 4x a day due to work. For your use any pump should really be fine.
And I have to tell you that if you plan to have your dh give the baby bottles start right away and often. We did that from the begining and everything was fine but we stopped for a few weeks. When I was returning to work the baby refused all bottles. It was horrible, she would scream. My poor mom! Eventually she did take it and would switch from breast to bottle with out a problem.
When we have another baby I won't make that mistake again!

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to do! Insurance pretty much never covers the cost of pump unless the baby is in NICU and is not able to nurse on his own (G-d forbid).
It doesn't matter what kind of difficulties you are having with latching or anything else at all. That is the only reason most of them will cover the pump...

me too!!
Have you been to the Upper Breast Side? They just moved but they are in the area of 72nd and Broadway. The woman who runs it can be a little harsh (She is an extreme breast feeding advocate), but she is very knowledgable.

My advice is to not commit to anything before the baby comes. I'd even rent one for a month once the baby comes to see if you can even tolerate pumping. Some women can't. And you also don't know if breastfeeding will work out. I'm so glad I didn't end up buying a pump because I would have been stuck with it when I ahd to switch her to formula due to severe allergies. I know I'm an extreme case, but I still think it's good to rent for a month or two to see if you will even have use for an electric pump. JMO.

I love my Pump in Style Advanced, but if you're not returning to work, a good hand-pump, like Avent Isis might be all you need. I used the Isis when I first started pumping and it worked really well. I started using my PISA now that I'm at work.
