WWYD? Making a long story short...but still kinda long

You live on a busy city block of apartment houses about 4 stories high. Each apt. has two front windows. There is a major subway line on one corner and a bus that runs both ways down the street. Last week you were walking home and saw a kid between the ages of 8-12 on the 4th floor of the apt. building next door to you has been screaming racial/homophobic and other derogatory statements out the window to the people passing by. He wasn't totally visible, just the top of his head and eyes.

Today you are sitting on your stoop with your baby and you see a nickel fly out the window further from your stoop. Then you see a small plastic toy. You look up at the window and see what appears to be a brick or block poised at the edge of the sill from that same window. A few minutes later, you see that the kid has moved the brick/block to the window that is closer to your apt. building and where you are sitting. Again, you can only see the kid's hair, eyes, hand etc. As you are sitting, an adult woman yells up at the kid to greet him--"Hello _____! That's where you live?" He must have stuck his head out for a minute. At this point, you packed up your DD and her stuff and go inside.

Just curious, IYO, what action does this type of behavior warrant?

Thanks!

ETA: There is a TON of pedestrian traffic and a LOT of babies, strollers, families etc.

At the time, I would have yelled holy hell at him. Because he's obviously moving to objects that will hurt someone, I think calling the police would be appropriate.

I would knock on that apartment door and alert his family about what he is doing. If that doesn't work then I would call the police. Sorry you are dealing with such a little hellion Chat Icon

See, the complicated part is that his family aren't exactly the most upstanding members of society, which I kind of wanted to leave out. I love my apt., my block and my neighborhood and I don't want anything or anyone compromising my happiness or the safety of my daughter, which is why any action I take, I would like to be anonymous.

If you don't want to talk to the renters, maybe the super or mgmt company of the building can intervene.

I would report it anonymously.

That is a threat to public safety.

Make a phone call to the police that a child is throwing things out of such and such building, the 4th floor. Hopefully a police officer will go over to speak to the parents.

then it is time to call the police.

the threat of a brick or a block falling on someone's head warrants it.

I would call the police & complain every single time I saw him. He is going to hurt someone soon.

Next up I would send an anonymous letter to the super & building owner about their tenants & their possible liability.

Anyone who gets hurt can expect I'd sent them & their attorney copies of those letters & a log of my calls to the police department.

ITA.

Someone could get seriously hurt; please do something now before we hear another horrific story on the news.

If you are in the city I would call 311. you dont have to give your name....or call the cops. What this kid is doing is illegal. Someone can be hurt by the things he is throwing out the window.

yep.

sometimes I'll even go in to the 78 and speak to the desk sergeant. they are pretty cool. and fairly quick at addressing these issues.

some jackass on a bike once rode by me and grabbed my butt from behind while I was on 6th ave walking to dh's house (then bf)...just stuck his hand out, grabbed, and continued riding

I winged him with my water bottle, which pegged him dead in the back and he turned up Flatbush. I walked into the 78, told them there was a bike riding pervert on the loose which could be identified by the big wet spot he now had on the back of his shirt.

they do take stuff like this seriously. Chat Icon

if you still live where I think you do, I probably know (by sight, I mean) the buidlings/families you are talking about. Chat Icon

ETA: if the apt is rent controlled, there may not be much the super can do, unfortunately. but the cops...that's a different story altogether.

oh and the other thing you can do...if they are section 8 then you can complain to the housing board that they are harassing neighbors. They could lose their section 8 assistance.
