WWYD?

Got a notice sent home today that a police officer is coming into my sons 1st grade classroom and bringing with him his "companion"... a German Shepard police dog.

My son is SEVERELY allergic to dogs, triggers his asthma, he will end up sick. Because of his severe allergies, he is DEATHLY afraid of dogs. Its BAD.

I do not want to "ruin it" for the entire class, but I also do not want to draw attention to him by having him removed from the class during the presentation.

WWYD? Call the teacher and ask for him to be removed? Keep him home that day? Or demand that they cancel the presentation?

I have already decided to keep him home that day, but I feel bad because its the last few days of school and they are doing a lot of fun things.

I think its unfair to him, yet, its not fair to the other kids to have it cancelled because of one child.

Re: WWYD?

I'd send him in and have him pulled into a 'special' activity when the dog comes in. I don't think it's necessarily bad for him to explain to his friends that he can't be around dogs. My son's friend has no problem telling kids he can't be around peanuts!

If the officer is very nice, he might find a way to spend a minute with your son sans dog.

I would do the same.

I would also remind the school of the allergy even though it's the end of the school year.

I would find out when the presentation is, then pull him out early or send him in late depending on the time.....unless the lingering dog hair will be too much. In that case, make sure to let them know that they have to be thorough when cleaning, or better yet have the presentation in a different room. I think that is reasonable.

I would call the school and "remind" them of your son's allergy. He shouldn't be excluded, the dog should be.

Re: WWYD?

I am surprised that a note wasn't sent home asking about the children's allergies. My daughter just had a presentation with the guide dog foundation and before it occurred, they sent home a permission slip asking whether or not there was any allergies. For the children that could not attend, they set up another presentation.

You might not be the only one facing this issue, call the school. It isn't right that your son has to be pulled out of school, maybe the officer can leave the dog behind!
