WR-what was the best bridal shower gift you received....
not something off of your registry but something unique, thoughtful, handmade or whatever?
The bride & groom do not own a house yet.

My sister & one of my oldest & dearest friends gave us our honeymoon at my shower. They paid for our hotel and gave us travel books and maps.

Someone made me a quilt and had everyone sign it at the shower.
I also got a tote bag full of honeymoon goodies (beach towel for two, suntan lotion and aloe gel, mad libs for the plane ride, and other cute stuff like that).

i got my sis a bunch of things for the honeymoon. i bought her the vera bradley hipster bag and filled it with maps/travel books. gum, mints, advil, bandaids (with baseballs on them-- BIL is a big mets fan) and a bunch of other things i cant remember right now... maybe she will remember... SHORTY!?!?!
i also got her a pots and pans set, an ornament with the bridal party and bride and groom and their wedding date on it, a sexxxxy nighty to wear on the honeymoon or wedding night, a some cool wishing well gifts. downy wrinkle release spray (an inside joke between us-- she uses it on everything! lol), candles, candle warmer... again cant remember the rest... i think i got carried away, but heck your big sis only gets married once right!

Not unique but it is something I use quite often and would never have put on my registry...My Crockpot
I also got a bunch of cookbooks..My bible is the Red Betty Crocker cookbook..it is fantastic

From DH's aunt - she bought me a tri-fold silk photo album that allowed me to put all my photos in chronological orde.r I never found another album like it and I love it!
From my friends - lingerie & toys! I never found time to do this shopping b4 the wedding and they covered all bases!

Honestly, my favorite shower gifts were things from my registry that I particularly loved. I put them on the registry for a reason. 
Favorite non-registry gift? Hmm... One of my friends gave me a gorgeous photo album. Also, I didn't get this for my shower, but a few days before the wedding... My ILs gave me a set of waterford toasting flutes with shamrocks on them. (I'm Irish  ) They are GORGEOUS. I will treasure them forever.

My DH's aunt made me a recipe book of all the things we love that she makes, and some other family recipes. She left blank pages and I added some of my own family recipes of my mom's and MIL. The best part was the sweet note she wrote to me on the front page welcoming me into the family.

ITA. I'm not big into baskets or sentimental stuff, because there is a chance the recipient won't want/need any of that stuff.

My holiday baskets... there was a basket for each holiday with decorations for the house. Absolutely my favorite. My aunt did it for my cousin and I kept saying that I wanted it too.

lol the only non-registry gift i got was a dud.
the wedding gifts that i loved the most were the things i really needed.... LOVE my knives!
i like the HM gift basket idea
the holiday gift basket idea
and the family cook book
all cute ideas

not from my registry..my landlady at the time gave us colored nesting bowls from Pier One that I still use today almost 12 years later.
They were the most useful practical things and I use them all the time and couldn't live without them.
They don't match anything but they are on my counter in plain sight and easily accessible.
I got some wonderful things and everyone was very generous (with few exceptions)

My mom made us different baskets for all the holidays. She put decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. I loved it!
