would you think it was weird if someone knocked on your front door...
said they were from the area and were complimenting something about your house; wanted to know what company you used?

IMO If it was a neighbor or we would wave when driving by, that they new I was living in the neighborhood, I wouldn't have a problem knocking. I have done it myself - Turnout Great -
If they can't at all Identify, I would wait till I see them outside so they feel less threatened. I have done that also - Turnout Great-

That happened to us.. we recognized them from the block so it wasn't weird.

SUCH a good question! i have seen some really nice driveways and/or landscaping in my area, and have thought about knocking on the door & introducing myself so i could find out who/what company they used...but i thought "they're going to think i'm some pyscho stalker" 
it'll be interesting to see the responses on here

i just moved into the neighborhood and absolutely love this house's brickwork for their flowerbeds and such, right around the block from us. they definitely won't recognize me so i feel weird. i don't think i look intimitading lol - and i wouldn't drive over, i'd stop while i was walking the pups... wouldn't be looking to go in or anything, just ask who did their work and if they'd recommend them.

We did this last year. We liked the brick work. They were very nice but couldn't recall the vendor.
They said they would call us to let us know, it never happened.
Oh well.

Not at all. I have done it myself, and had it done to me. Someone rang my bell to ask me where I got one of my Christmas decorations. I rang someone's bell to ask who was their landscaper. Not odd at all IMO.

I wrote a card to someone around the block- thye have the same house as us and did extensive work to it. I left my number, both phone and house #. She walked over the next day.

I plan on doing that when we do our siding. There are two houses in my neighborhood that I love (same style house) so #1 I want to know who they used and #2 Want any advice on it. Walking the dogs passed is a great idea. I would even leave a note if they weren't there!

My sister in law told us to do this when we look into dormering. She said she has had people come by her house and ask to look around so they can get ideas for their houses....

Not at all! My mom recently knocked on someone's door (in a different neighborhood) because she loved their siding. The guy was sooo nice - gave her a piece of his scrap that he had in the garage and the box with the sku number so she could match it. I think it's flattering.

Not at all.
I have done it when I fell in love with a type of cultured stone a house that i was driving passed had that i have never seen before-
I was hesitant-like you, but figured the most they could do is say they werent willing to share the info. (they were actually happy to share!)
And after I redid my home, I had about 4-5 people do the same thing. I actually found it flattering!

Nope...not weird. We've had that happen to us a few times and we have also rang the bells of neighborhood people asking for referrals of things we liked as well.

Nope, not at all. When we renovated the front of our house, someone knocked on our door wanting to know who did our landscaping and brick work. We gave them the numbers and we felt good afterwards because someone liked what we did to our house enough to stop us and ask us about it!
