I was offered a position as a teacher in a brand new school.

The school this year will only be 6th grade. I will be one of 2 math teachers.

Positives:
-Seems like a great principal (I know people who know him and speak highly of him)
-I can really have a voice in how things are shaped
-Only 1 grade which makes the school manageable this first year
-I've already taught this grade/subject and feel confident

Negatives:
-20 minute longer commute
-many, many unknowns
-Wearing many hats and working longer hours (I imagine)

What would you do?

Thank you - I'm just worried about what my day-to-day duties would look like.

I think it's a great opportunity...just weigh out what your other responsibilities are...I am a mom of 2 young boys, and I know for me, I wouldn't take something that would require me to work late every day. But if you can do it, it sounds great that you can make decisions about curriculum and such.

Sounds like a good opportunity. I would love to teach at a small school where I knew everyone and everyone knew me. Also, think of all the impact your ideas could have in shaping the future of the school. You could make some lasting changes, and that would be so fulfilling.

Plus, from your other posts it sounds like your current principal is a power-crazy control freak and you'd be wise to get away from her.

Congrats on the job offer! Chat Icon

I would be very careful. It can be wonderful or horrible to be at a brand new school.
Why is it new? Did the school in the building close because it wasn't doing well? In those cases, the new small schools generally don't attract the best students. Teachers in new small schools are really expected to go above and beyond their positions. If you have the time and energy for that, great, but if you have other responsibilities it may be difficult. Whatever you decide, good luck!
