Would you switch pediatricians over this?

My Pediatrician for my six month old son made a comment about the fact that I work FT.

I told him that I would be returning to work that afternoon after DS's upcoming appointment (My Mom watches him during the day at my house so she will take him home). I go to all of his doctor appts.

The ped says " You work FULL TIME? Wow." I said "well, yes we need two incomes, it is important that I work". He responds with "Well- it is more important for you to be home and there for your child".

I should have said something back- but I was just stunned- and upset. I don't feel that I am less dedicated to my DS. He will always come before work. But I felt like I was being judged. Chat Icon

If you are sure he meant it in a bad way then I would be angry. I sometimes feel the ped is judging me because I stay home. She asks if he only stays home with me. I feel she thinks he needs socialization. I feel the need to defend myself but I also think I am reading into it more.

I would just shrug it off if he is a good ped. Making a comment like that is stupid and insensitive, however if he takes good care of you and your son, I would just ignore it.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I don't think I would switch over that but that is HORRIBLE comment and he obviously has poor bedside manner. My ped was the complete opposite he made a comment once that everyone works these days and their kids are in daycare b.c SOME people have a mortgage and other bills to pay - as if my family doesn't have any of those thingsChat Icon

That is such an ignorant, judgmental, and WAY out of line comment. I'm pretty sure I'd start looking for someone new ASAP. No one needs to be in the presence of such an idiot when there are so many other non-judgmental, competent doctors out there. Chat Icon

Though I would not be happy. Geez it's 2008 not 1958.

Are there other peds in the practice that you can see?

I agree...he would be losing my business......there are too many wonderful and sensitive doctors out there, I would leave that practice

Yes, unless I really loved him, but how can you love someone who would make such a judgmental comment? Chat Icon

I'm surprised this day and age someone would even make a comment like that. I don't know if I would switch, if you like him otherwise.

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

It depends how it was said but I'd be likely to switch in the situation you describe.

My pediatrician has made it clear that she thinks that a very young baby will get sick in day care and that a parent should be able to keep a sick child home. If the job or the persons circumstances did not allow for that, my ped. might have something to say.

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

hmm hard one. it would really depend on how much i thought of him as a physican. If i liked the care my DC got then i would probably stay. If he is just the run of the mill Ped then i think i would leave. Judgement like that is bound to spill over into care

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

Personally, that would be too much for me to forget, so I would switch. I have a low tolerance for comments like that. I could no longer respect him, and therefore would either request a different doctor in the practice, or switch practices.

Everyone is different, but a comment like this would bug me. I also think it's very unprofessional, so I would look for another doctor.

Doesn't make him a bad doctor medically speaking, but you see them so often, and you want to see someone you and DS are comfortable seeing.

Sorry about this--I'm really surprised he would have this attitude.

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

This would annoy me to no end. My ped is crazy and very sarcastic - so if he said something like that to me I could tell him to kiss my azz. If you don't have that kind of relationship w/ your ped where he said it in a joking matter then I think I would find another one personally! Chat Icon

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

My *old* ped said this to a friend when she had concerns about his development. He said that she needed to cut down her hours to focus on him and working was a direct cause of his behavior! Talk about guilting a mother. Like she wouldn;t cut back hours if she could...
Everytime my kids are sick my new ped says..He's in daycare right?? As if that is always the cause.

I'm not ignorant, I know in both cases working too much/daycare could be contributing factors, but its not the end-all-be-all.
I would stay if I really liked him, I would also say something to him.

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

I would not only switch I'd be sure to let them know why I was switching and maybe even make a formal complaint.

The Dr. had no right to insult you like that. You are doing the best thing you can for your family. Your son is with someone who loves and cares for him just as she did for you. How could that be in the least bit wrong?

Actually he is only 39 years old!! I think he is all right- there are several other doctors in the same practice who are just as good, according to my neighbors- I may have to just switch to another.

Re: Would you switch pediatricians over this?

I would have confronted him right then and there and told him when he started paying my bills, he could make that comment to me.

As much as I dislike most doctors, I have learned there is something to dislike about many of them. And the next one may be worse. If that is the only thing he's done to piss you off, but is a wonderful doctor - maybe wait and cool off from the comment.

I would definitely try the other doctors and see how you like them. The doctor that I thought I liked at my PED office really bothered me at one of my DS's appointments so I tried another doctor at the practice and I really love him. I would definitely try the other doctors before you switch the practice completely.
I am sorry he made such a rude comment to you. Chat Icon Chat Icon
