Re: would you or have you signed for someone with bad credit?

I would for my dad but he would likely never need me to cosign.

I cosgined for a friend for a student loan and regret it. We were friends but have not been in a few years.

She just filed for bankruptcy and I only found out since I call Sallie Mae EVERY month to make sure she makes her payment. They are not coming after me for the money but I did contact her to let her know that once the payments start up again (student loans are NOT discharged in bankruptcy) that she will need to continue making her payments.

She studied bankruptcy law and even clerked for a bankruptcy judgeChat Icon Chat Icon I have no idea what she thought she might discharge by filing for bankruptcy other than a car she recently bought (her boss co-signed)Chat Icon

Maybe she has a lot of medical bills. BK isn't just for credit cards.

Re: would you or have you signed for someone with bad credit?

Absolutely not.
My dh's cousin's bf wanted him (we didn't though) to co-sign on a motorcycle. He had to hide it so they wouldn't come and reposses it!!

Have you checked your credit reports lately? It can be reported on your credit too.

Student loans are not dischargeable in BK, thus she HAS to pay on it. Chances are if she defaulted, it was already on the co-signers credit report prior to the BK filing.

I wasn't even aware that people actually have a co-signer on a student loan. I really thought they give those to just about anyone that is going to school.

do you have a PACER account? If you are curious, you can access her filing, which lists all the debts. I can check for you, too.

Just saw this. No she did not default. I called every month to make sure. It never hit my credit report other than to say it was in deferred status.

And she KNEW she could not discharge the student loans. She clerked for a bankruptcy judge and she worked at a bankruptcy law firm when she lived in NYC.

I had her sign a promissory note a few years ago just in case Chat Icon I always figured she would try something like this.

Re: would you or have you signed for someone with bad credit?

I have...for my husband. His credit was terrible because of mistakes he made, so we were working on him building his credit and he needed a car. I knew our finances were combined, so there woudln't be a risk involved.
It worked out perfectly becasue he eventually traded in the car for a different one and the new loan is in his name!

I doubt I would for anyone else though...besides a child.
