I would never leave a contractor alone in my house. God knows what they would do. JMHO.

I agree. I wouldn't trust a stranger alone in my home no matter how nice he or she seemed. Either myself or my husband would have to be there the whole time.

I totally understand feeling this way. But what do you do if major, major work is going to be done in your home that's could take 1 or more months to complete?

DH is a contractor and most of his customers leave him alone. He mostly works off of referrals, though, so people are comfortable leaving him. He also does not use shady workers, or day laborers, and has one trustworthy longtime employee.

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?

We had our bathroom redone in the winter of 07. It took 3 weeks, we could not take 3 weeks off from work so we had no choice but to let the contractor and his workers come and go. If I had the day off I was there, if DH had the day off he was there. Plus we had to move out because it it our only bathroom....so DH got there everyday before they left for the day to check things over and etc...

I totally agree. I think it's unrealistic to say you wouldn't ever leave a contractor in your home alone. I'm sorry, but I can't take 1+ months off from work just because my kitchen is being ripped out or a dormer is being put up.

No! My parents did this last year and he stole my dad's digital camera, tools, etc.
