I am so hurt that my DD was not even acknowledged for her 1st Christmas.

I send out their gifts weeks prior to Christmas and get the response of money being tight and being busy?

You can't get an ornament or something sentamental? You are that busy?Chat Icon To me it speaks leaps and bounds of what you think of your family!

Re: would you be hurt if you DC didn't get a gift from a CLOSE family member

We didn't receive a gift for my son from BIL and SIL - I made sure to drop their kids gifts off at the house the next weekend.

We haven't heard anything about a gift so I'm going to assume there is none.

In my mind I have been done with these people anyway so this is really just icing on the cake.

If they even bought a gift - I could never hold onto one for WEEKS after Christmas and not give it to a child. So so rude!

Did the person buy anyone else a gift? If so and dd was the only one who didnt, then yes I would be very upset.

If I read your post correctly, said family member HAS children that you routinely buy for, correct?
Then yes, I'd be ticked.

Ok, well, yes, since you bought for their kids and didn't get anything in return.

But let me give a little bit of a different spin. Some years I buy for my niece and nephew and DS gets nothing b/c they are short on money. Especially since it involves either ordering online or shipping the gift. There have been other instances where they bought for DS and I didn't buy for them. I guess I don't really get offended by it b/c I've been in that spot too.

ETA: If DS didn't get a gift from my SIL, I'd figure money was tight.

I'd be annoyed if it was family, and I'm a little spiteful...I wouldn't send a thing the following year, or at least wait to send it AFTER I received and give the same excuse...

Childish, I know, I know, but whatever...what goes around comes around in my opinion...

Yes, I'd be upset. They could have at least gotten something small to let you know that they were thinking of your DD. Chat Icon

Not getting a gift wouldn't bother me as long as they called or sent a card or whatever.

My dad forgot my 18th birthday and DS's 2nd birthday completely. No card, no call, nothing. That broke my heart.

Not to hijack this thread with my issue but let me say that if someone I was close to said that money was tight and let's not exchange gifts this year - I would absolutely understand and even probably still buy gifts for their children.

In our case - they are just the most selfish human beings around who think of no one but themselves - so this has nothing to do with money. I was upset that DH's nephews weren't getting our gifts on Christmas Day - nevermind two days later. We are 3 weeks past Christmas now and not a word was uttered. It is so rude.

ETA: DH has seen this one particular brother numerous times since Christmas also!

Re: would you be mad if your DC did not get a gift from a close family member?

I am trying hard not to be, but I am holding a gruge.

Josh's b-day is a week before Christmas.

MIL did not send a thing. not even a card.

Christmas, MIL and FIL did not send anything...

I sent them both tins of cookies, christms cards...money is tight for me too, but I found a way.

My vow of poverty nun sister knit him things and sent him a b-day gift.

My FIL can't work...so fine. I don't take issue with him. He sent Josh 10.00 for his b-day.

MIL...ughh. She's in a "slow season" currently. So if you aren't getting work, wouldn't you apply for a seasonal job????

Her b-day was late Nov. I sent her a snapfish book....even though it was free, I still took the time and sent it to her. She loved it.

Re: would you be mad if your DC did not get a gift from a close family member?

Thank you for giving me opinions.

Trust me I know what it's like to be tight on money...I am not working and my DH works tons so I can stay home with DD (down here in NC the salaries I am being offered doen't make it worthwhile to put DD in daycare).
We just bought a house over the summer, that is not even completely furnished, but I am able to buy this person and their kid a gift. I took the time to think out too. I don't expect something extravigant, but something that took some thought would have meant something to me and to have my DD be able to look back on.

I think most would be hurt. Money can be tight but even just a small token goes a long way. I have been there too so I totally understand.

SIL got no gift for DS this Christmas, nor for his birthday which was a little before.

It annoys me, but she has issues IMO. Doesn't excuse it, but I don't want to get bent out of shape over it either. Like some said, unless you are destitute, some little thing is probably possible.
