Re: Will Smith

Do we even know the cause of her alopecia?
Because it's not always a "disease"
It can also come from abusing your hair.
I know, I have it.
I have permanent bald spots from wearing clip in hair extensions for 15 years.
It's called traction alopecia. And it can become permanent if you don't address it.
I don't consider myself to have a disease though. And CERTAINLY not a disability.
I consider myself to have been an idiot in the name of vanity and now I'm paying the price.

But either way, it doesn't matter.
The whole thing is ridiculous

Janet Jackson was cancelled in a hot second for a wardrobe malfunction at a sporting event. Will Smith acts like a Neanderthal and cave man at a supposedly classy event gets a standing ovation. This is what’s wrong with this world.

Exactly. It’s crazy! If he acted as an impulse, he had more than enough time to reflect and at least throw some type of apology at his speech but instead he said he’s a vessel of love…lmao!!!!

He apologized to the Academy but NOT straight to Chris Rock.

Because calling it a disease makes it more dramatic and easier for people to defend disgusting behavior done by their idol. I like Will Smith so I will defend him at all cost. Will Smith Good, Chris Rock bad! Lol.

I’m not ignoring or denying that Jada has gone through some stuff due to alopecia. But she also has always had short hair or been bald before, worn wigs or extensions. It’s not like it was this huge transition for her.

We Americans must be really bored with our lives. Lol.

I’m a fan of both but I think Will Smith is in the wrong.

I've read her alopecia stemmed from over treating her hair through the years, it's certainly not a disease she's had her entire life. I agree with you, it's definitely not what I'd consider any kind of disability.

I didn't even know she had any issues so Will's reaction appeared even more out of left field to me.

He didn't apologize to Chris Rock AT ALL. He apologized to the academy and basically tried to justify his actions throughout his entire speech.

Comedians make fun of people, that's what they do, Especially Chris Rock. And Will Smith laughed at the joke at first. What a loser.

Exactly!!!

Chris Rock makes fun of everybody!!

There are about 2 people I would love to punch every day at work. Do I? No.

You know comedians are hosting, then don't go.

That's like going to comedy club and not thinking you were going to be picked on.

While it's not right to make fun of someone's disability/illness/whatever no matter what the cause - it's also not right to retailiate violently and then preach love...

Yes - comedians are supposed to be funny but certain topics should be off limits. Both Will Smith and Chris Rock were wrong.

Did Chris Rock even write that joke?? Thought these things are krafted by writers and the jokes are pretty much "approved" beforehand....Didn't this joke go thru alot of people's hands??

He probably didn’t write it. And there have been far more “offensive” or “mean” jokes at awards shows in the past. All the actors know that they will probably be made fun of (especially if you’re in the front row) bc that’s what happens year after year.

Don’t comment on someone’s appearance. Full stop.

That being said, Will Smith shouldn’t just be hitting people because he doesn’t like what someone said. I’d be in jail if I did that, lol.

Everyone who is saying Chris is wrong for making fun of her looks, he did not insult her looks. And if you think that’s what bothered Jada, you are fooling yourself. She probably wouldn’t want any joke about her, I can guarantee you it’s pride and she thinks she should be off limits. Any joke would have pissed her off, it’s the audacity of Chris to even target her is what annoyed her.

Eta: the Smiths seem to have a queen bee/God complex similar to Beyoncé and Jay Z.

100% agree with every word of this. They are SO full of themselves, that speech alone proved it.

I think the Academy should have removed Will from the audience. They said they don't condone violence and yet they let him continue to sit there and then receive an award. What kind of message does that send?

I was stunned. As was Chris Rock. If you keep watching after he hands out the award, he was still not okay.

If ANYONE else did that...let's say Jessica Chastain's SO marched up and slapped him, he would have been immediately escorted out.

All these Hollywood folk screaming privilege...well privilege is color blind as evidenced right here.

Also, do all of these self serving actors need to have a platform? Just take your trophy given to you by your peers who are the only people who saw the boring movie you were in and go home to your mansions and cry about inequity to your house servants.

Just to add...Regina Hall made a joke about their marriage earlier in the show and that seemed to get the A-Ok.

And also, before Chris said anything he said "Jada, ya know I love you" and then proceeded with the joke which, I am a huge Chris Rock fan, and that was a softball if I have ever seen one.

And honestly for Will as black man to march up and punch another black man at an award show which has proven to leave out black people is ridiculous. He should know better and do better, there were a million other ways to handle that situation and the joke wasn’t that serious to warrant all that. Will Smith doing too much.

Also I feel like he was also being a bully. If it was Jay z, 50 cent, Eminem or the rapper that screwed his wife who made that joke would he have gone up and slapped that person? I don’t think so. Will Smith knew he could get that off the on Chris Rock.

It was such a classless move on Will's part.

Not to mention, they've all been friends since the 90's, how sad that they couldn't handle a joke from their comedian friend.

Whatever same sh!t, slap or punch - it was still one black man hitting another one on a prominent award show - live. Pathetic. Will should know better. Do as you preach Mr. no violence. No one remembers his rap song where he called out Eminem for violence and curses in his lyrics?

Like i said I didn’t watch. Some were saying slap, others punch but a hit is a hit. And while a punch may cause more damage, a slap can hit just as hard and be deemed degrading. Being slapped by another man can also hurt your ego. I don’t want my point getting lost with semantics.

It was SO degrading. I give Chris Rock mad props for basically shaking it off (even though he was clearly stunned), making a quick joke about it and then finishing up without missing a beat.
