Will everyone South of Sunrise Highway need to Evacuate?
My mother told me that she heard this on the news this morning. That those living south of sunrise will most likely have to evacuate.
Is this accurate? If so, where do we evacuate to? I wonder if I should go to my parents in N. Babylon Saturday night or Sunday am. They live near Deer Park Avenue - this location would be safer right?
Ugh, I am so anxious. I am 27 weeks pregnant and I am so worried about this storm.

This afternoon the Nassau County exec said that everyone south of Sunrise should be prepared to evacuate on Saturday night. The high tide is coming in around 7pm and the hurricane's winds will be arriving around then so the storm surge could start then and flood out the streets south of Sunrise. He suggested finding a friend or family member north of Sunrise you can crash with for the weekend. They have some kind of phone system that will call all landlines located south of Sunrise if he decides to evacuate.
If you live on the barrier islands (say Long Beach) he said you should pretty much plan on being evacuated.
ETA: I forgot to say that there are shelters too, I think they said on the news they will be at Nassau Community College, SUNY Farmingdale and Locust Valley HS, but I'd imagine they would open more if they need to evacuate us all, they said it's something like 400,000 people south of Sunrise.

We are South of Montauk in Amity Harbor and flood regularly during a normal event. I will figure out by tomorrow if I am going to go Upstate or not.
DH plans to stay.

we are a few house north of Montauk highway in Bay Shore, like other posters our basement floods easily....
MZ - your headed upstate? are you planning on driving???

I really don't think Holbrook is in an evacuation zone.

Nassau County OEM urges all residents to prepare for the worst case scenario with Hurricane Irene. If you reside South of Sunrise Hwy, you live in a coastal flood zone. As such, we advise you to immediately contact friends and family that reside north of Sunrise Hwy to seek alternative shelter. Do not wait for the storm to arrive. Now is the time to plan and prepare.

I really don't think Holbrook is in an evacuation zone.
Holbrook isn't in an evacuation zone, too far north from the bay. I'd be worried if I lived south of montauk.

We got the call too. We haven't figured out what we're going to do, especially since we don't have any family north of Sunrise Hwy!

Yup. Nassau County started doing automated calls asking people south of Sunrise to crash with a friend north of Sunrise.
