Who thinks up what to cook?

Just wondering if Your DH ever helps to think of ideas of what to cook each week. I feel like I’m ready to slam my head against a brick wall every single weekend thinking of what to cook, and when I ask him for ideas, all I get is “whatever you want,”or “whatever is easiest for you” or the like. For background Yes, I do the cooking, and yes, I’ve told him a zillion times what makes it easy is to have something told to me what to make! Vent over. Is it just my household like this?!?!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Never. Not once, in almost 9 years, has DH ever cooked. Or chosen a recipe. He made DD boxed Annie's mac n cheese once and it was like soup.

I don't really ask for his opinion, tbh. I don't really care. I won't make things he doesn't like but I just menu plan, go shopping and that's it. He often doesn't know what we're eating until it's plopped on the table and he definitely never knows before he gets home from work.

All me. I've learned not to ask for his input bc I end up not happy with his choices lol. I plan and cook all our dinners and make his lunches for the week. Thankfully, he doesn't complain and eats whatever I make.

I do a lot of Pinterest browsing while we watch tv at night and save recipes there. This way when I make my grocery list I usually have ideas to go to.

We both kind of decide
But we mostly play the “what do you want for dinner? I don’t care what do you want” game
Other nights I will just grab stuff to make and say this is what we are eating tonight
We should have more of a set schedule but never do

The mental burden.

This also comes up when I get stuck at work or am real stressed. I say order something. And there’s 50 million questions on what. Just make food appear, like I do 360 days a year.

Sorry, I feel your pain.

Who thinks up what to cook?

Always me. DH can't even make toast. He is a pain in the butt for food so I don't even cook for him anymore. If he wants to eat what I make for me and the kids, there is plenty, if not he gets his own food.

Re: Who thinks up what to cook?

With BF and me, it’s usually me. I order Hello Fresh and that saves me a ton of time. I pick out what I like and they deliver everything for those recipes. Then I’ll go to the supermarket and get eggs, milk, wine, etc. However, I sometimes get this delivered.

If I’m missing something, then I have BF pick it up on the way home. He’ll usually pick up flowers for me, too, so I make sure to forget something, lol.

Re: Who thinks up what to cook?

Ive got the opposite annoying problem. My dh doesn’t cook either but he sends me recipes constantly of stuff he wants me to make. Most times it’s stuff that is complicated and time consuming and my favorite are the ones that I have to go out and buy new spices for. I wish he would stop suggesting it’s drives me crazy!

I don’t like when they make suggestions like that. I would just ignore him. For example, my BF says he doesn’t like spicy food. I say OK, and I add as much spice as necessary. He says it is usually delicious. What they don’t know won’t hurt them.

I don’t mind the planning, but let me do my thing. My BF likes bacon with every meal. It’s annoying. I literally have 6 packages of bacon (luckily they are German sized and small, but I do have two I got from the US commissary in my freezer) in my fridge now. And it interrupts my cooking routine in the kitchen. He’ll come in and be like when can I put the bacon on? I just say sit down and watch TV.

I do most of the cooking, and I decide what I cook. I prefer it that way. Once in a while dh will ask me if I can make a certain meal that he likes, and that usually means making a special trip to the grocery store, so i actually dont like that Chat Icon When dh cooks, he decides what he makes.

Who thinks up what to cook?

Sometimes I will ask if there is something specific he wants for dinner but most weeks I choose. We typically do steak one night, pork chops another, some sort of chicken, fish, etc every week. I have a pretty extensive “tried and true” recipe board on Pinterest that I will go through if I have issues figuring something out. I typically also try one new recipe (also pinned on Pinterest) per week.

I usually ask if there is something specific he wants for dinner that week. Otherwise, I do all the planning. I use Pinterest for ideas and like to try ne recipes. He’ll do the food shopping on the weeks we work opposite shifts but I write out the list for him.

Re: Who thinks up what to cook?

I make suggestions sometimes, but DH primarily does the meal planning and does all of the cooking and grocery shopping. I bake when I have time, but DH is a much better cook than I am and enjoys it.

Who thinks up what to cook?

We rotate the same 5 or 6 things so we never work too hard lol
Meatballs, tacos, rotisserie chicken, grilled chicken with tatziki, chicken Cutlet, baked ziti, or sausage and always 1 day of either pizza or Mexican with hopefully leftovers for the NXT day.

My BF and I usually toss ideas around and come up with something. And I'm lucky he will also cook.

Funny side note, I dated someone for a few months who never cooked. Not in past relationships and not with us. It was one of the reasons I stopped seeing him.
It bothered me that much!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Who thinks up what to cook?

The majority of the time dh cooks; when he doesn't and i'm home and i text him asking what he wants, he never has an answer.

I'm not the best cook (hence why he usually cooks!) so i'll just go through my saved recipes on Pinterest and see what ingredients i have. It is annoying that he never has any ideas when i ask; mainly because i'd like to make him something he's interested in or in the mood for!

OP: maybe just keep a bunch of recipes on Pinterest and cycle through?
