Since it's only 5 days, I wouldn't want to travel too far. I was telling DW that I'd love to do a family vacation to Washington DC. I haven't been there in ages. Not this year, since we have other stuff going on, but I'm hoping we can spend a week there pretty soon.
Lots of museums, monuments, etc. DC are getting old enough to appreciate them now.

5 days in July?
Local: Montauk
Outside the US: Somewhere in Canada
Inside the US: Napa Valley or Durango, CO (I know random but great times there!)
Another month would bring other choices

ITA with this.. the flight is shorter than if you went to Florida.
you definitely do NOT need more than 3-4 days there.. you can actually see the entire island in 1 day.
i used to stay at the Hamilton Princess hotel every time i went. it is located in the center of town and convenient to everything, meaning if you wanted to take a midnight stroll you could.
the spa at the princess is AMAZING!!!!!! i used to go 4x a year for business but got to enjoy myself and do touristy things each time

we ARE going away for 5 days in July and staying local!
Out East! North fork, shelter island, sag harbor, hamptons and montauk.
We always stay at a B&B in Greenport and then take the ferry to Shelter Island. We hang out there for a while then hop another ferry to Sag Harbor where we can drive anywhere - Hamptons, Montauk etc.

Probably Florida. I really want to check out Harry Potter world in Universal.  
ETA: Jamaica isn't a bad flight either... or maybe Vegas??

Maybe a 5 day cruise. We did a 5 day Bahmian in March and loved it. Maybe a Bermuda cruise out of NY?
I *might* go to Orlando, but only if I were staying really close to a park (like walking distance) or doing a Universal hotel so I'd have universal Express and early entry and could do all of the rides without having to wait in long lines and so I could go back for a swim in the middle of the day.
I'd also think about a local place, like Newport, Mystic, New hope, PA. One of the places you'd normally go for only a weekend, but really take the time to enjoy and get to know the place.
