When to tell other kids...

I've been going out with my bf for over a year. He has a 6 y/o son with autism. I have a 3 y/o son.

My DS has noticed things about bf's son - "how come he doesn't answer you mommy?", "how come he's still in pull-ups?".

When should I tell my DS about bf's son? More important...HOW?

I think you should tell him now. There is no need to shelter him or think he will not understand.

Just tell him matter of facts. No lengthy explaination.

Some children ask me why DS say "aaahhh" instead of talking. I just say "he does not know how to speak yet". I usually get "oh ok". Children are very simple.

So true, they are also very empathetic by nature. It's amazing to see how kind little ones are to each. They are also each others best teachers. So the more understanding your son has for your bf's son, the more he may try to be model. Knowing about all these "milestones" takes away from so much of the enjoyment of life. It's no wonder why kids can enjoy themselves so much more easily.
